Mother of DUI Victim Speaks Out at Sentencing Hearing

A former Orland Hills cop, who pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI in connection with a 2010 Interstate 80 near New Lenox, hears from the victim's, the Sun-Times Media reports.

The mother of 20-year-old Da Von Pitts, who was killed in a fiery crash in September 2010 on Interstate 80 near New Lenox, testified at a sentencing hearing today for Robert C. Caputo, a former part-time police officer for Orland Hills.

Caputo, 62, pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI in the aftermath of the accident. Pitts' pickup truck had a flat tire and was parked on the shoulder of the road. He was on his cell phone when his vehicle was struck from behind. The vehicle was force into the ditch where it burst into flames.

The victim's mother, Regina Pitts, Tuesday spoke out at a sentencing hearing for Caputo before Will County Judge Edward Burmila.  "Mr. Caputo, I hope you can open your heart to feel my excruciating pain," the Sun-Times Media reports.

For the court record, she said, "Please don't drink and drive. Next time it could be your son."

Formal sentencing is scheduled for July 9. Caputo faces as much as 15 years in prison.
