Businesses Hit Hard by Construction at Rte. 30 and Schoolhouse

The Route 30 construction project is digging into the pockets of some local businesses.

You can almost hear a pin drop at Paradise Smoothie ever since Route 30 construction shut down traffic going south on Schoolhouse Road.

The Route 30 construction project is through New Lenox to Harlem Avenue in Frankfort, but it's not fast enough for some commercial ventures. The businesses at Atrium Point on the southwest corner of the intersection as well as Walgreens on the southeast corner are suffering a dry spell.

Customers can't make their way easily into Atrium Point unless they're aware of the entrance across from Lincoln-Way Central High School, 1801 E. Lincoln Highway. Walgreens customers have to come in through the neighborhood streets to gain any access.

For the owner of Paradise Smoothie, 1938 E. Lincoln Highway, the road closure has been particular tough. He sells smoothies, flavored tea, iced coffee and ice cream. It's usually a summertime spot for the kids, but it's quite this season.

Owner Justin Nola said business is down 30 percent due to the road closure. He's hoping to post a temporary Paradise Smoothie sign at the west entrance to Atrium Point.
