D122 Agenda: Bus Schedules, Language Arts Program and More

The District 122 Board of Education meets tonight at 7 p.m.

Despite an outpouring of parent concerns and questions, the New Lenox School District 122 approved schedule changes for student transportation earlier this year. And though it's unlikely that anything will change before next school year, the board is going to revisit the issue at its meeting tonight. The district expects to save about $372,000 by minimizing the number of buses and drivers needed by staggering start times. This was part of a $2.5 million budget reduction plan approved by the Board of Education in February. The savings would come from cutting 19 buses and 16 drivers, a result of dropping off grades 4-6 first at 7:30 a.m. and making start times for kindergarten and junior high the same later in the morning. School Board Bits: D122 Honors Retirees

The board also got an update on its budget and language arts program.

The District 122 school board had an early meeting Wednesday night to make room to honor the district's retirees with a reception afterward. At the end of the meeting, district spokeswoman Jenny Zimmerman recognized the five retirees in attendance (out of eight total) with kind words and parting gifts. "They work hard to prepare our children for the future," she said. "Thank you for everything you do." The retirees are: Schultz spoke about his 33 years with the district and brought some old relics to show his proof of tenure, including sweatshirt that said Oakview School, before the "Oster" was added, as well as a handwritten pay stub. D122 to Revisit Communication With Residents During Meetings

Follow some complaints over the board's responsiveness at meetings, new board President Nick DiSandro hopes to create more dialogue.

New District 122 school board President Nick DiSandro said communication was what he wanted to improve most when he was elected to the board last month. Less than a week after taking a seat on the board, he's asking the board to revisit its policies in regard to public comments and board interaction with residents at meetings. Under the school board's current policy, the board is allowed to listen to public comments but not provide feedback. "To open the lines of communication between the board and our community, we have decided to revisit the policy and see if there isn’t a better way to have an open dialogue," DiSandro said in a news release.
