The New Lenox school board voted to keep bus schedules the same next year, the cheapest of six options considered. Parents voiced concern with this year's new transportation times, primarily because of issues it caused for their work and child care schedules. But only 22 percent of families responded to a survey District 122 issued asking parents to prioritize what was most important. After voting to keep schedules the same, the board also cut student fees by $40. Parents took to the New Lenox Patch Facebook page and article comments to share a variety of opinions, from joy to disgust. Only 22 percent of families responded to a survey the district administered (meaning 2,767 families didn't reply). It didn't ask parents to choose one of …

To those who are mad at the lack of responses to the survey, I can agree with one of these posters about problems with accessing the poewschool site. I also asked for a new password twice via email with no response either time. This was very aggravating as I was eager to input. Neverthelesss, I am disappointed with the final decision and can empathize with the parents who have had a tough time …   more ›

D122 Bus Schedules Will Remain the Same

After considering six options for New Lenox transportation, the school board decided to go with the cheapest choice: keeping things the same. Only 22 percent of district families responded to a survey asking about the options.

District 122 parents, don't change your day care plans. After considering six options for transportation, the New Lenox school board decided to go with the cheapest choice: keeping things the same. Last year, that allowed the district to cut 16 drivers and 19 buses, saving about $372,000 to help reduce the district's budget deficit. It moved the drop-off times for grades 4-6 to 7:30 a.m., junior high and morning kindergarten at 8:20 and grades 1-3 at 9:10. These moves concerned some parents who thought the start time was too early for younger kids, and they said they would also need to make new after-school plans because junior high students were still in class. I am not employed by NLSD or LW210. Sorry, I am in a different district but what does that have to do with it?? Being in the educational field doesn't give me special privileges - I am the same as every other parent out there. I don't have a flexible schedule. I leave the house at 6:30 every morning and get home at 4:30 every night. Being in a different district - our schedules are not the same, …   more ›

Vote: D122's Best Bus Schedule Option

The District 122 school board will vote tonight whether to change the bus schedule in New Lenox

Article updated Feb. 14 The District 122 school board will vote tonight on one of six options to change bus schedules for next year. The board meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Feb. 15, at the Haven Administrative Center. After changing bus schedules this year to save about $372,000, some parents voiced concern and board members promised to try finding an alternative. All six options the board reviewed would increase costs at a time the state is reducing the amount of transportation funding it reimburses. Vote in the poll at the bottom of this article. Earlier this month, the district administered a survey to all parents through PowerSchool. But some board members questioned whether the new bus schedule is something most parents care about. "I …

D122 Extends Busing Survey Through Today

The survey was sent last week and was originally set to expire Friday night. The district sent an email to parents Sunday saying the survey will remain open until 3 p.m. today, Feb. 6.

District 122 is giving parents a bit more time to respond to a survey soliciting feedback on bus schedule options. The survey was sent last week and was originally set to expire Friday night. The district sent an email to parents Sunday saying the survey will remain open until 3 p.m. today, Feb. 6. Parents are asked whether they are satisfied with this year's new bus schedules, which were changed to have intermediate students arrive to school at 7:30 a.m. and saved the district about $372,000. Because of some parents' concern with the new schedules, the district promised to look at alternatives and settled on six options, all of which would bring new costs. Review the six options and vote for your favorite. Some District 122 board members …

Parents Voice Busing Concerns to D122 Board

The board will select an option at its Feb. 15 meeting, but urged parents to speak out, take the survey and contact the members to help make the best decision.

District 122's decision on bus schedules isn't going to make everyone happy, but with parents' input it might be a little easier. That was the sentiment shared by board members and about 25 community members who attended a Q&A session Wednesday night. The district issued a survey to parents this week to get a feel for what mattered most to them when it comes to the bus schedules, which were changed this year to a three-tier system that had intermediate students arrive to school at 7:30 a.m. That change saved about $372,000.  After some parents voiced concern over the changes, the school board promised to look at alternative schedules. The district has proposed six options, all of which would increase the cost. The board will select an …

D122 Busing Q&A Tonight; Survey Issued to Parents

The District 122 school board meets at 6 p.m. tonight, Feb. 1, at the Haven Administrative Center. A special Q&A session regarding transportation will open the meeting.

As District 122 considers six options for bus schedules and their financial implications, the school board is seeking parents' input. The district issued a survey Monday to gather feedback from parents, who have voiced a range of opinions on the bus schedules that were changed this year to have intermediate students arrive to school at 7:30 a.m. Review the six options and vote for your favorite. "Our school officials have reported that the schedule has worked well. Some families agree, while others do not," a letter to parents read. "Since we understand that any version of a school schedule can positively or negatively impact the day-to-day lives of families, we want to gather additional input from you. "Your feedback is valuable in …

Unfortunately, NL Mom, I think you are right, they are going to do what they want, no matter what the parents think. The survey was a poor attempt at pretending to appease unhappy parents. I suspect they will state that not enough people responded to the survey. I did send an email to the board expressing my concerns, but I don't know that it will matter in the long run. I just wish I could …   more ›

D122 Gets Financial Forecast With Facility, Busing Decisions Ahead

District 122 held its annual January strategic plan meeting to review finances and other major plans for the district. Administrators stressed that the district is in good shape, but there's a projected $1.1 million deficit for the fiscal year 2013 budget

New Lenox school board members got an update on District 122's five-year financial outlook last week, readying them for important decisions that will be made for next year. District 122 held its annual January strategic plan meeting to review finances and other major plans for the district. Administrators stressed that the district is in good shape, but there's a projected $1.1 million deficit for the fiscal year 2013 budget because of a lack of state payments. That was the focus of last week's financial forecast. Illinois has failed to make two payments totaling $2.2 million to District 122, and as state reimbursements for transportation continue to decline, the local schools are left the weather the storm. The financial forecast is …

D122 Reviews Six Bus Schedule Options

School Board Bits: Bus Schedules, Photo Contracts Debated

The school board discussed revisiting changes to district busing schedules this winter.

Despite concerns over the changes to District 122 bus schedules, school board members agreed Wednesday that it would cause more harm than good to reverse the decision it made in February. The school board voted to save about $372,000 by cutting 19 buses and 16 drivers, a result of dropping off grades 4-6 first at 7:30 a.m. and making start times for kindergarten and junior high the same later in the morning. Member Maureen Broderick said she wanted to address the issue again because it’s something that was brought up by a lot of voters when she ran for re-election. “A lot of parents were concerned with what we’ve done," she said. "We’re creating a bit of an issue with the day care situation.” But there are too many logistical issues to …

A survey on the district website is a great idea and should be used for all major decisions such as the bussing issue. As a taxpayer, I appreciate the opportunity. And I don't think the board should panic about having taxpayers share their ideas about how our money is being spent. All we are asking for is open and honest communication. Maureen is right, I can barely find one parent who truly …   more ›
