Editor Michael Sewall makes his pick for New Lenox's athlete of the year.
After Patch readers selected Tommy Schuman of Lincoln-Way Central as the Athlete of the Year, it was time for me to hold up my end of the bargain and make the editor's pick. With six more incredibly talented nominations to choose from, I decided to go with Morgan Flaherty, the state bowling champion from Lincoln-Way West. Read about the other six nominations for Athlete of the Year. Flaherty, a junior this past season, averaged an incredible 230.3 at the state bowling tournament, winning the championship to become Lincoln-Way West's first state champion. She averaged a 198 on the season, according to bowling coach Scott Jablonski, who nominated Flaherty. Other accomplishments included: "She continues to push her bowling to the highest …

Danijela Jackovich was picked by reader's as New Lenox Patch's 2011 athlete of the year. The star water polo athlete is a scoring machine for Lincoln-Way Central and this year played for the Team Youth USA in Hungary this summer.
There aren't many people who can better personify the term "student-athlete" than Danijela Jackovich of New Lenox. The Lincoln-Way Central junior is an All-State water polo player who's also on the U.S. Olympic Development Team, and she's currently ranked No. 1 in her class academically. Jackovich was voted by readers as New Lenox Patch's 2011 Athlete of the Year. When she's not in the pool, Jackovich is probably buried in a book to maintain her GPA, which her coach said was 4.812 on a weighted 4.0 scale. She also went to state with the Mathletes and is a member of the Science Club and the National Honor Society. "It takes a lot of time management," she said. "I have to contribute a lot of it to swimming because the practice can be so …
New Lenox high school athletes were fun to follow this year, boasting state titles, pro talent and a whole lot more.
As a big sports fan, I'm happy to live in New Lenox. With three high schools and lots of history in the programs offered here, there's a lot to pay attention to. Earlier this month, readers voted Lincoln-Way Central junior Danijela Jackovich as the Athlete of the Year for 2011. But there are many other local athletes who deserve some recognition. Making it into a top 10 list was difficult; what criteria would I use? And honestly, there were too many accomplishments to mention. So here are some of the prep athlete standouts this year in New Lenox. State Champions Where else to start? This year, the boys Lincoln-Way Co-op gymnastics team won the state championship, scoring a season-high 163 points. The team also added four individual state …
