Women Behind the Wheel: Weird Crime 2012

Sliders and muscle relaxant don't mix • That's really hidden below the belt, young lady • And this guy swings a mean, mean bat ... Weird Crime of the Southland 2012.

Strange-but-true stories from the Patch files of bizarre and ridiculous antics perpetrated by your fellow south suburbanites the past year. Auditioning for the Next 'Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle'? A Mokena woman who drifted over the center line, jumped the curb and almost hit a telephone pole just before midnight on Sept. 12, told cops she was driving home from White Castle. She had a half-eaten slider in her hand that she continued to munch on despite the officer's repeated requests to drop the burger. After cops towed her car — and the White Castle burgers still inside — she refused to talk to the cops. She was accused of driving under the influence of painkillers, muscle relaxants and Ritalin. How Do Hamburgers Smothered in Onions Make a School District Smile?

The answer is: Additional tax dollars are scooped out to help support budget-tight school district.

New Lenox School District 122 board members got to work rolling out a plan to live with persistent funding shortfalls and late payments from the state. At a Committee of the Whole session by New Lenox School District 122, board members and administrators on Wednesday took a calorie-counting approach to keeping the budget tight. Supt. Michael Sass reminded the board that the state is consistently late in paying its bills. NLSD122 is owed $1.7 million.   At the same time, Business Manager Harold Huang echoed the same cry that impacts school districts around the state: the situation is not expected to improve any time soon.    Still and all, Huang said he saw some light at the end of the tunnel. A few of the newer businesses in the village …

White Castle Serving Beer: Is This a Good Idea?

White Castle is testing restaurant beer sales in Indiana. Who knew folks had a hard time finding a few cold ones before they got to White Castle? A Patch Poll.

Sliders and beer — sounds like a dangerous combo in so many ways. White Castle chain is testing beer and wine sales at a restaurant in Lafayette, IN, thinking customers might like a cold beer or a glass of wine to wash down a Crave Case or two. Aside from the gastrointestinal distress this combo conjures up, aren't there enough White Castle customers showing up pre-lit already? To wit: What do you think? Would you like to see beer and wine on the menu at your local White Castle? [ Did You Know? The Southland is home to a Crave Case Hall of Famer, Dale Bemis. ]

A perfect combination. Drink then, slam down some sliders - all at the same place. Think how much gas(oline) this will save. All they need to do is add a car key dropoff and a limo service, and it's pure gold.   more ›

Auto Zone First Business to Open in Walmart Lots

White Castle and Culver's are under construction.

Auto Zone opened a week before Christmas, making it the first business added to the lots surrounding Walmart. The store, located at 671 E. Route 30, sells replacement auto parts, accessories and tools. Tools may also be loaned, and Auto Zone offers an engine light check for no charge, battery installation on some vehicles and will also replace lights and windshield wipers on some cars. In addition to individual cars, it also handles commercial accounts. But Brian Colvin, parts and sales manager, said the thing that sets Auto Zone apart is the customer service. "We'll go above and beyond," Colvin said. "We want to keep customer visits to just one visit. A lot of times, a customer will come in and get something but have to come again for …
