Video Gambling: Ordinance to Benefit VFW, American Legion

The first reading of a proposed amendment to the village's video gambling ordinance makes an exception for the VFW and the American Legion.

 Mayor Tim Baldermann introduced the first reading of an amendment to the video gambling ordinance at the regular Village Board meeting Monday. The amendment makes an exception to the village's ban on video gambling by allowing fraternal organizations-only to operate video gaming in their establishments. The proposed amendment works to circumvent a previous decision by the board to opt out of a collaborative partnership with the state. Last June, trustees voted 3-2 to opt out of a partnership with the Illinois General Assembly that would allow video gambling as long as the state got a cut. It will be interesting to see just what happens when it comes up for vote. Kids don't want to play video poker when they can play the video games that parents let them play at home. The Village Board Considers Amending the Video Gaming Ordinance

The New Lenox Village Board intends to re-visit the conversation about video gambling at tonight's 7 p.m. meeting at Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway.

In June 2012, trustees voted 3-2 to opt out of a program with the Illinois General Assembly in which some of the profits from legalized video gaming machines go to fund construction projects. Representatives from the VFW and the American Legion had complained that the ordinance to restrict video gaming would hurt their business. Readers might like: The 2009 state program allows businesses a 30 to 35 percent cut of the total profit and the village would get 5 percent. Trustee Annette Bowden said in June 2012 that she was uncomfortable in shaping a partnership with the state in this type of program. Veterans Day Ceremony at the Village Commons

In honor of the veterans and active-duty military personnel who serve to secure our freedom in America, this Veterans Day Ceremony honors their sacrifices.

As is typical for those who live in the community dubbed "The Home of Proud of Americans," New Lenox residents came out for the annual Veterans Day Memorial Celebration. At the 11th hour, on Nov. 11, about 60 New Lenox residents—young and old—gathered at the Village Commons on Veterans Parkway to honor the veterans and active-duty military personnel who serve to secure our freedom. In the same manner as elected officials and representatives from VFWs and American Legions across the nation, New Lenox had its share of brief tributes. Mayor Tim Baldermann, Rep.
