5A Football: JCA Staves Off Lincoln-Way West 21-20 in Overtime Thriller

Joliet Catholic Academy 21, Lincoln-Way West 20 (OT): Zach Rezin and J.B. Butler teamed up to stop the Warriors' Justin Keuch inches short on a potential game-winning two-point conversion run on the final play in Saturday's thriller in New Lenox.

Breaking It Down: When Ty Isaac exited with an injury in the fourth quarter, Joliet Catholic Academy turned to Michael Ivlow and its defense to stave off Lincoln-Way West 21-20 in an overtime thriller in the Class 5A football quarterfinals Saturday in New Lenox. Ivlow scored on a 1-yard run. Brian Bravo kicked the extra point and JCA led 21-14. Lincoln-Way West’s Javier Montalvo cut the margin to 20-20 on a 10-yard touchdown run. The Warriors elected to go for two points and the win. Justin Keuch was stopped inches short on a quarterback read-option play by JCA’s Zach Rezin and J.B. Butler. Football: Dream for Weaver as Providence Outlasts JCA

Chad Weaver steps to the forefront after others go down in Providence Catholic's 40-34 victory over Joliet Catholic in a nationally televised shootout on Friday night in New Lenox.

Breaking It Down: No, it’s not true that the game ball went to the last man standing. Rather, it went to the littlest man—Chad Weaver. His do-it-all performance powered Providence Catholic to a 40-34 football victory over Joliet Catholic Academy Friday night on the Celtics' new synthetic turf field in New Lenox. An overflow crowd and ESPNU television audience watched the neighborhood rivals slug it out from start-to-finish in a battle of attrition. JCA senior running back Ty Isaac, a USC recruit, was the first to go down. He exited with a shoulder injury at the 2:37 mark of the first quarter. Later, Providence’s Brandon Price was sidelined with an ankle injury, but not before he made his presence known, too. Price ripped off a 77-yard TD …

USC Recruit Ty Isaac Exits Game for Hospital

According to ESPN, Joliet Catholic's Ty Isaac "will be OK" but is getting evaluated at the hospital after injuring his right shoulder.

Star running back Ty Isaac of Joliet Catholic left the game—and then the stadium—after banging up his shoulder early against Providence Catholic.  Isaac, who has verbally committed to play at the University of Southern California, got off to a good start, carrying the ball seven times for 67 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown.  But after that, he was tackled hard by three Celtics and landed on his right shoulder. He was shown on ESPNU sitting on the sideline without his shoulder pads. During the half, ESPN reported that Isaac had left the stadium with his father, Tyrone, for further evaluation at the hospital.  Joliet Catholic coaches wouldn't say what the nature of the injury was when asked by Patch, but ESPN said "he will be OK."  …

Playoff Primer: Kremer's High School Football Hot Picks

Sports Editor Ron Kremer takes a stab at predicting the winners in all 11 high school football playoff games involving Southland Patch teams. Check out the power of his crystal ball.

Homewood-Flossmoor (6-3) at Marist (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Terrific first-round matchup, one that pits two quarterbacks (H-F’s Tim Williams and Marist’s Ian Woodworth) and two explosive offensives. First team to 50 wins? Pick: Marist. Sandburg (6-3) at Brother Rice (6-3), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Sandburg has the defensive front to make life tough on Brother Rice running backs Andrew Walker and Martez Walker. Stop them? That’s another story. Pick: Brother Rice. Plainfield South (5-4) at Lincoln-Way East (9-0), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Look for Lincoln-Way East to put the pedal to the metal here in a bid to get its starters out early. Griffins will face Providence or Wheaton Warrenville South in Round 2. Pick: Lincoln-Way East…
