New Lenox's Newly Elected Sen. Toi Hutchinson Drops Out of 2nd District Race

The state senator, whose 40th District now encompasses portions of New Lenox and Frankfort, has decided to stay put. She dropped out of the race for Jesse Jackson's Congressional seat.

Toi Hutchinson announced Sunday that she has withdrawn from the race for the 2nd Congressional District seat, and will be backing Robin Kelly to oppose former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson. The senator for Illinois' 40th District, which now encompasses portions of New Lenox and Frankfort, was elected Nov. 6 and announced only three weeks later a decision to throw her hat in the ring to represent the 2nd Congressional District. Today, she announced that she'll stay put.     "Robin is a friend, and has captured momentum in pulling our community together," said Hutchinson in a release. "I am simply unwilling to risk playing a role going forward that could result in dividing our community at time when we need unity more than ever. In the wake…

Toi Hutchinson Announces Run for Jesse Jackson Jr.'s Congressional Seat

The Olympia Fields Democrat was re-elected in November to the 40th state Senate seat, which represents parts of Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Frankfort, Homewood and New Lenox.

Illinois Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields) announced Thursday that she will run for the 2nd Congressional District seat recently vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr.  Hutchinson, who was appointed a state senator in 2009 after Debbie Halvorson was elected to Congress, was re-elected to the 40th district seat in November, winning over Tuck Marshall (R-Frankfort). The 40th district expanded this year to include the southern parts of New Lenox and Frankfort, and also represents Chicago Heights, Flossmoor and Homewood.  "Families in the South Suburbs and the southside deserve a representative who understands their concerns and who will work alongside President Obama to create new jobs, rebuild our roads and schools, and protect the gains we’ve …

Check out www.voteAnthonyWWilliams.com Compare, then decide. If Debbie was such a tireless worker and cared about our district why hasn't she spoken out on any of the issues affecting us from the time she lost the seat? This goes for the rest of the contenders. I support Anthony W. Williams who does work tirelessly unlike those currently in office, the newly elected and others running. When have …   more ›

Toi Hutchinson Retains 40th District Senate Seat

Hutchinson's opponent, Tuck Marshall, commended the senator for running a clean campaign.

Toi Hutchinson will remain the state senator for the 40th District after a victory over Frankfort challenger Joseph "Tuck" Marshall. Hutchinson grabbed 80 percent of the votes in south suburban Cook County, with all precincts reported. She took just under 55 percent of the votes in Kankakee County, with all precincts reported. Marshall beat out Hutchinson in Will County, taking just more than 56 percent of the votes with all precincts reported. Hutchinson said maintaining her seat in the 40th District is "wonderful," and the state senator said she respected her opponent's challenge. "Everybody has a right to run, and I take every challenge seriously," Hutchinson said. "It takes a lot to put your name out there. I know exactly how that …

State Senate: The Tribune Tells You Who to Vote For

The Tribune likes two Democrats and one Republican in the Southland's State Senate races. Hutchinson, Cunningham and Montalvo are endorsed.

The editorial board of the Chicago Tribune just wrapped up its endorsements for State Senate candidates, giving the nod to two Democrats and one Republican in Chicago’s south suburban districts — the 18th, 19th and 40th. In the 18th, Barbara Ruth Bellar seems built for Tribune favor — or a talk show — but the endorsement went to Democrat Bill Cunningham. Republican Edgar Montalvo, of Tinley Park, a pro-business underdog, won the paper’s backing over Democrat Michael Hastings of Orland Hills. Both are military men — Montalvo served two Army tours in Iraq; Hastings graduated from West Point and served one tour. And the Trib held its right-leaning nose and gave thumbs up to Democrat Toi Hutchinson in the 40th over Frankfort Republican “Tuck” …

Ben, I'm very happy that the staff of the Patch have been able to find gainful employment. You've been more fortunate than about 23 million other Americans during the Obama depression! What you do is give sparks to a fire, and then fan the flames to make it burn. That's fine. But don't forget that the reason people keep coming to the Patch is to see what posters write, not what the "author" …   more ›

Women Voters Key for Obama's Re-election

The First Lady's speech highlights how, in a 50-50 nation, the narrative that wins this fight may win the White House. Female politicians from Illinois gave their reaction to news from the convention.

CHARLOTTE, NC — President Obama "believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and our health care,” First Lady Michelle Obama said during her Tuesday speech to the Democratic National Convention. "That's what my husband stands for." It was a continuation of a consistent message from women at all levels the Democratic party: This election is about the government’s right to control your body. Earlier that day, just a few blocks away from where Mrs. Obama spoke, Gov. Nikki Haley made the Republican pitch. “Let me tell you about women. Women are extremely smart,” the first female governor of South Carolina said. “They care about a lot more than contraception.” Those two arguments — that the 2012 …

Love when they sent Michelle Obama out to Iowa to campaign with her husband. They had her in a red gingham dress with her hair as plain as can be. She looked like she should have been on an episode of Hee-Haw. Give me a break, don't insult us.   more ›

Frankfort Man Plans Senate Run Against 'Cook County Machine'

Frankfort Republican Tuck Marshall is slated to run against Democratic incumbent Toi Hutchinson, of Olympia Fields, for the 40th District state Senate seat. Newly drawn maps bring Hutchinson's district into some of Frankfort and New Lenox.

Fearing a Cook County takeover of Will County politics, a Frankfort man is planning to run for a state Senate seat against Democratic incumbent Toi Hutchinson of Olympia Fields.  J.C. "Tuck" Marshall, 65, was slated by the Will County Republican Party to oppose Hutchinson in the 2012 election for Illinois' 40th District Senate seat.  Newly drawn district maps extended Hutchinson's reach to portions of Kankakee and Will County, including the southern parts of Frankfort and New Lenox. Her district still represents parts of Flossmoor and Chicago Heights as well. New maps also brought longtime Chicago Democrat Bobby Rush's district into the south suburbs. "I bring a Will County perspective," Marshall said. "We’re more rural. People have the …

Dear Folks, Tuck Marshall is a "proven" entrepreneur/businessman who made it happen in the business world...in a number of successful enterprises. His election will mean lower taxes, honest politics, and end to Illinois being the last in everything good. He will give a fair shake to both BOTH men and women...and their children. He is a man that will make us proud! Toi worked for "Ducking Debie …   more ›

Analysis: New Lenox Reps to Get a lot More Democratic

The deadline for state House and Senate candidates to file for the election was Monday, and the only contested race for New Lenox voters is one between three Democrats.

Like it or not, three-quarters of the conservative-leaning New Lenox's state representation will be Democrats following the 2012 election. The deadline for state House and Senate candidates to file for the election was Monday, and the only contested race for New Lenox voters is one between three Democrats. States are required to redraw district maps every 10 years to reflect population shifts based off the 2010 Census, and as a result New Lenox will have two new state senators and one new House representative. Rep. Renee Kosel (R-New Lenox) is the only candidate to have filed in the 37th House District, meaning she'll still represent local voters. But that's where the familiarity ends. Because of population growth, New Lenox added a state …

Can't wait 'til Bobby Rush represents me. The Dems are doing a beautiful job with our State, considered the 2nd or 3rd worst (financially) in the country. Additionally, considered the 1st or 2nd worst state to retire in, based on recent data.   more ›

Street Rep: Laraway Road a Dividing Line for New Elected Officials

Parts of New Lenox could see more Democratic representation when new state and congressional boundaries go into effect with the 2012 election.

When the 2012 election rolls around, New Lenox will likely see new faces to its politics. Almost a month ago, new state and congressional maps were passed that make some major changes to current district boundaries. States are required to redraw district maps every 10 years to reflect population shifts based off the 2010 Census. Although the eleciton is a ways off, Mayor Tim Baldermann said Monday that he'd been contacted by state Rep. Anthony DeLuca (D-Crete), who represents the 80th House district in Illinois, which will include New Lenox residents south of Laraway Road come next year. DeLuca would be the village's second state representative, with current Rep. Renee Kosel (R-New Lenox) continuing to take up the majority of the village…
