Taxpayer burdens are cause concern when it comes to approving a tax levy at NLSD122.
The New Lenox School District 122 Board of Education approved the 2012 tax levy estimate resolution Nov. 28, but not without discussion about the burden taxpayers in New Lenox face. Approval of the estimated resolution—a total levy of $45,431,208—was achieved by a vote of 5-2. The two naysayers, Board of Education Vice President Sue Smith and Board Member Maureen Broderick, asked for more information about the financial consequences of holding the line on taxes. Last year both Smith and Broderick opposed the 2011 tax levy. The current proposal is 4.03 percent or just over $1.75 million over last year's rate, according to Harold Huang, business manager. This translates to a $45 increase for the average owner of a $230,000 home. The …

New Lenox taxpayers benefit from medical facilities.
The New Lenox Village Board provided an overview of the upcoming property tax levy Monday night. The levy is expected to increase slightly. The increase is expected to be minimal—about $10 for an average homeowner with a $200,000 house, according to Kim Auchstetter, village finance director. . Last year, villagers also saw an increase that averaged $10 as well. However, the village saw $5.3 million in fresh growth in 2011. This year, growth from new homes and medical facilities brought in to accommodate Silver Cross Hospital made up for only $1.8 million, said Auchstetter. Meanwhile, the equalized assessed value of New Lenox homes is estimated to be down about 5.5 percent compared to a 5 percent drop last year, said Auchstetter. The drop …

The New Lenox Village Board approved a slight tax increase Monday, but is also reminding residents to turn in tax rebate forms that will refund 50 percent of last year's property taxes.
The deadline to submit your tax rebate form with the village is this Thursday, Dec. 15. Residents eligible for the refund will get 50 percent of their 2011 property tax bill returned. For the average resident, that equates to about $150 returned from the village. Applications were mailed late in October, so if you haven't received a form you either aren't eligible or it was misplaced. To get an application, you can go to Village Hall or download one from the village's website. How do you know if you're eligible? Only residential properties qualify, so township residents are not eligible. The average homeowner will give about $15 more to District 122 through property taxes than last year, but it could have been much more if not for the new debt structure.
Facing a potentially large tax increase, the New Lenox District 122 school board took steps to lessen the burden on taxpayers. The board approved an estimated tax levy Nov. 16 and also voted to refinance the district's debt. The average homeowner will give about $15 more to District 122 through property taxes than last year, but it could have been much more if not for the new debt structure. Last year, for example, the average tax bill increased $100. "We need to ensure that a high standard is maintained, and we remain responsible to the parents and taxpayers," board President Nick DiSandro said. Originally, the district structured its debt repayment for new buildings with conservative estimates based on assumed growth from new families …

New Lenox plans to levy about $50,000 more in taxes this year, which would mean about $10 more for the average homeowner. But the Village Board reminded residents that they'll get half their property taxes back.
Despite a small tax increase on the village's property tax levy, New Lenox residents could see a net savings because of an increased tax rebate. On Monday, the village announced plans to levy about $50,000 more than the village asked for last year. For an average homeowner with a $200,000 house, that means about $10 more paid to the village. But the Village Board authorized giving half of residents' property tax bills back, up from 40 percent last year. For the average resident, that means an additional $30 back. The board gave official authorization Monday to rebate 50 percent of these property taxes to eligible residents and reminded those residents to turn in their rebate forms by Dec. 15. About 3,000 people have already returned forms…

The county board shot down a tax increase last week and could now vote on the $170.4 million budget on Nov. 17. The board's version of the budget would reduce taxes about $15.
The Will County Board could pass its annual budget this week, but there's ongoing debate about whether Republican-sponsored cuts will impact services. Members of the public can comment at the next board meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet. The proposed budget may be viewed between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the office building, or online at the Will County executive's website. In October, the board approved a tax levy that would save the average taxpayer about $15 on the county's portion of their bill. County Executive Larry Walsh proposed a $171 million budget, but the board was looking to cut $2.7 million from that. Democrats on the board have …

The village's property tax levy will increase by about 3.8 percent from last year.
The New Lenox Village Board approved a property tax increase Monday night, but village officials are proud they've been able to rebate taxes and keep the rates down compared to other county municipalities. The village will levy $2,280,969 in 2010 property taxes, up 3.8 percent, or $84,820, from the 2009 levy. Village finance director Kim Auchstetter said most of that is funded by new growth. Auchstetter has a brochure available to the public that breaks down key notes regarding the property tax bill that residents may pick up at the Village Hall. Village officials know that people are upset about increased taxes, but they point to several factors to ease the concern. "I'm proud that we have one of the very lowest tax rates in Will …

Absolutely right, Nikki. But I wouldn't rely on the government body which is imposing the tax levy to be completely forthcoming about how their requested tax levy will impact the taxpayers. I think some answers are needed before the Dec 19 meeting. And on the temperament of the administration: probably one of the reasons why the public does not get as involved as it should with their school …   more ›
