Brian Urlacher Says Goodbye to Professional Football

One of the most popular Chicago Bears is now calling it quits, according to CBS Chicago.

Chicago Bears veteran of 13 years Brian Urlacher officially retired Wednesday morning, according to CBS Chicago. The 34-year-old linebacker says he has no regrets ending a professional career playing exclusively for the Chicago Bears. “Although I could continue playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards,” Urlacher told CBS news. "When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13 year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear.” Urlacher recently made news in March when he couldn’t strike a new contract deal with the Bears—claiming the one-year, $2 million offer was “a slap in the face.”  What's your reaction to …

Knights football, baseball, soccer and volleyball stars recruited for college athletics teams.

Look for Lincoln-Way West Signing Day on Friday. Speaking at a ceremony at LWC's Knights of the Round Table Hall, Baseball Coach Scott Gardner spoke equally about Mikolajczak's athletic and academic prowess. Should Young Children Play Sports That Could Lead to Traumatic Brain Injury? MomTalk

State tells coaches and trainers to learn how to help curb the debilitating effects of recurring concussions among high school athletes.

Illinois government and school officials have taken a zero tolerance stance against sports-related head trauma just in time for football season. Gov. Pat Quinn signed a new state bill last month, House Bill 200, effective immediately, that requires students who leave a game as a result of a head injury to be cleared by a doctor before returning to the playing field. The National Federation of State High School Associations estimates that 140,000 students sustain sports-related concussions every year. While football players comprise the majority of this statistic, the new law applies to all student athletes. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveal that sports are the second-leading cause of traumatic brain injury in young adults in the…

@Nate - ummm, think about your question again. Because parents do NOT always do what is best or safest for their children, sometimes out of ignorance, but also- and unfortunately, sometimes out of selfishness they do what is best for THEM or THEIR (own) needs.   more ›

Will They Play Again Next Year?

Brain injury and concussions in the NFL are getting a lot of media attention this year. Do the penalties of playing football as a kid outweigh the rewards?

After week six, the NFL fined three players for excessive hits: $75,000 to James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers and $50,000 apiece for the Patriots' Brandon Meriweather and the Falcons' Dunta Robinson. Both Robinson and the player he hit, Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, suffered concussions as a result of the hit. Bears' quarterback Jay Cutler was concussed after being sacked nine times in the first half of week four's game against the New York Giants, and linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer has been on injured reserve since the first game of the season, and might be considering retirement because of repeated concussions. The 2010 season was preceded in April by the suicide of Owen Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania junior lineman …
