NLSD122 Board Remembers Newtown, Approves 2012 Tax Levy

The tax levy vote had its share of opponents.

The New Lenox School District 122 board room was alive Wednesday night with well-deserved celebrations of children's accomplishments, but the pain that robbed the life-blood from the community of Newtown, Ct., did not go unrecognized.   Board President Nick DiSandro waited till after the awards were handed out to a group of cheerful givers and the girls basketball teams were lauded for successful seasons to call for a moment of silence. The noisy exit of excited students and proud parents served as a poignant reminder of the senselessness of last week's tragedy. In a building not unlike Sandy Hook School, DiSandro shared with those who were left a message about the district's commitment to keeping the schools a safe place for learning, …

Worry and Fear Grips Schools and Parents in Wake of Newtown Shooting and Local Threats

Random and disturbing threats in the Chicago area followed the Newtown school killings, underscoring vulnerabilities and prompting discussions of gun control and guns for teachers.

The first day of school after the Sandy Hook school massacre brought a wave of fear, worry and outright threats to Chicago-area communities as educators and police sought to reassure people that efforts to protect their children would be redoubled. Parents and educators everywhere were talking about school security even as incidents locally in the last three days underscored potential vulnerability. Here's a glimpse of what's taken place in the past few days. In Downers Grove, parents discovered that schoolhouse doors were unlocked and flooded the district with calls. The school district decided to lock the doors this week and install temporary buzzers. Administrators will consider installing an advanced system. A buzzer and badge system …

Too bad WGN wasn't reporting from both of these locations at the same time, it would shine a light on all these "security experts" and PD's who are just getting camera time for 30 -180 seconds on the local news feed. We also need (1) voice for the media and one head of chain of command so that information is not reported differently but several agencies.   more ›

Former L-Way Teacher Allegedly Threatened to Shoot School Officials (Update)

Former high school teacher Ryan Gardner faces a felony in connection with threats against Lincoln-Way school officials.

A former Lincoln-Way Central High School teacher who checked himself into a Chicago hospital for psychiatric care faces a felony charge of telephone harassment in connection with alleged threats against school district officials. A warrant for the arrest of Ryan Gardner, 40, was secured late Tuesday afternoon. Gardner, who reportedly lives with his parents in downstate Danville, headed north and voluntarily checked himself into University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago, said Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. Even though he is receiving psychiatric care, Gardner would have been able to leave the hospital of his own volition, Glasgow said. Officials hit Gardner with the felony charge, accusing him of calling Lincoln-Way School …

In Wake of Connecticut Shootings, New Lenox Police Increase Presence at Schools

District 122 board president Nick DiSandro added that the school board will discuss safety in schools at its meeting this Wednesday.

After a group of young children who were honored for their football accomplishments left Village Hall last night, Mayor Tim Baldermann asked everyone to share a moment of silence for the lives lost in the Newtown, CT school shootings last week. "I wanted to wait until the kids left, because families handle things differently with talking about the tragedy," he said at the village board meeting Certainly, children and parents across the country are asking now whether they will be safe at school in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting that left 26 dead, including 20 young students in Connecticut. "That may have happened a long distance away from here ... but it touches us all," Baldermann said following the moment of silence. He commended the …

"Our schools are the reason residents come here".......then look at other articles where people are trashing the outgoing superintendent who helped build the reputation of the schools. And they wish they'd never moved here. Yet they stayed for years and years. Such differing opinions. You think that kids are comforted by seeing armed guards? Another differing opinion here.   more ›
