The Celtics take 1st at the IHSA Cheerleading Tournament in Bloomington.
Providence Catholic High School's varsity cheerleaders made history Feb. 2 by earning the school's first State Championship title at the Illinois High School Association Cheerleading Tournament in Bloomington. With a score of 93.72, the cheerleaders gave PCHS its 26th State Championship title. The varsity cheerleaders placed second in State in 2007, third in 2011, fourth in 2012 and fifth in 2009. The squad won its IHSA Sectional Cheerleading Championship title for the third year in a row, said Jamie O'Brien, PCHS communications director. "Furthermore, they had an undefeated season." The community of New Lenox had more than its share of losses this year. It's particularly hard when it's our children.
I'm fairly certain there's never been a Year in Review before for a category of stories that ended in the tragic loss of young lives in New Lenox alone. As a parent and community member, I'll attempt here to honor the lives of those we lost too young. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the children we lost in 2012 from this community. For some, the heartbreak will continue even in the courthouse, as the cases are heard and decisions are handed down. From a look at this lengthy list, it's obvious that these young lives had touched so many others. Some wrote eulogies in a song, and others dedicated baseball games or soccer tournaments. Still, the practical approach seemed to drive another needed and helpful outreach …

Students take a pledge that they won't text and drive.
Providence Catholic High School students, faculty and staff recently participated in AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign, which educates the community on the dangers of texting while driving. “The campaign’s message is clear and very compelling,” said Donald Sebestyen, Principal of PCHS. Hundreds of students, those who are already driving and those who expect to get that license soon, participated in a campaign aimed at alerting kids about the potential dangers of not paying attention to the road while sitting behind the wheel. Providence Catholic High School lauded academic excellence in a presentation. Don Sebestyen, Principal of Providence Catholic High School, is pleased to announce that six members of the Class of 2012 have earned the distinction of being National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Scholars. The National Merit Semifinalists include seniors Alyson Duzansky of Mokena, Grace Morrison of Mokena and Mary Strickler of Tinley Park. The Commended students include seniors Gabriella Berman of Joliet, Brian Daniher of Mokena and Madison Wall of Lemont. “We are very proud of these students who have demonstrated exceptional ability in this highly competitive program.
