Village Board Lights the Way for Electric Message Board

Provena Healing Arts Pavilion is granted permission to shed light on their programs.

A zoning variance request by the Provena Healing Arts Pavilion to install an electric message board was granted by village trustees at the regular Monday meeting.   The request made first at an August board meeting had stirred a debate over the potential to negatively impact the character of the Route 30 commercial district. Ultimately though it worked to draw attention to the issue of whether or not the existing sign ordinance is up-to-date with current trends. The message center was the topic at the board's Sept. 15 review session, as well.   Provena Healing Arts Pavilion was granted permission to install an electronic message center into the existing freestanding sign. The deadline for submitting property tax rebate forms is Dec. 14. …

How Do Hamburgers Smothered in Onions Make a School District Smile?

The answer is: Additional tax dollars are scooped out to help support budget-tight school district.

New Lenox School District 122 board members got to work rolling out a plan to live with persistent funding shortfalls and late payments from the state. At a Committee of the Whole session by New Lenox School District 122, board members and administrators on Wednesday took a calorie-counting approach to keeping the budget tight. Supt. Michael Sass reminded the board that the state is consistently late in paying its bills. NLSD122 is owed $1.7 million.   At the same time, Business Manager Harold Huang echoed the same cry that impacts school districts around the state: the situation is not expected to improve any time soon.    Still and all, Huang said he saw some light at the end of the tunnel. A few of the newer businesses in the village …

Testimonials from Women Who Survived Breast Cancer

Women share their stories of hardship, determination and survival from breast cancer at an educational program presented by Provena Healing Arts Pavilion, New Lenox.

Two area women offered their stories of hardship, determination and the will to survive as part of a Provena Healing Arts Pavilion breast cancer program. The two-hour presentation at the Provena Healing Arts Pavilion, 410 E. Lincoln Highway, first featured Dr. Wendy Marshall, breast expert, who shared the basics of understanding breast cancer. Her message: conduct regular self-breast examinations, seek annual checkups and mammograms for women over 40 years old. Then, as a way to cement the informational session, Mokena's Cindy Pepper summarized her experience with breast cancer. Her breast cancer was detected in a mammogram. After chemotherapy, radiation and a double masectomy, she told the group to stand tall and be strong. "Don't assume …

Breast Cancer Self-Examination: 'Do it Enough to Know What's Normal'

Dr. Wendy Marshall, a breast expert for Provena Healing Arts Pavilion in New Lenox, gave women the low down on breast cancer detection.

How do you talk about breast health and keep the topic light? Dr. Wendy Marshall, a breast expert at Provena Healing Arts Pavilion, made a serious topic seem more like a conversation between friends. At an Oct. 16 presentation at the Provena Healing Arts Pavilion in New Lenox, a crowded room full of women laughed and learned among other things the importance of self-breast examinations and what to look for. The primary message of the two-hour long presentation, which included testimonies from breast cancer survivors, was early detection by way of self-examination, annual checkups and mammograms for women over 40 years old.   Good breast health means regular self-examinations to determine your own body's unique features. "Do it enough to …

Village Board Debates Electric Signs, Swears in New Police Officer

Also at the meeting, Fuller's Car Wash was granted a special use permit to build near Lincoln-Way Central.

A zoning variance request by the newly-opened Provena Healing Arts Pavilion to install an electronic message center sign stirred a debate among village trustees at the regular Monday meeting about the viability of the current sign ordinance.  Director of Community Development Robin Ellis explained that due to the medical facility's location in a commercially-zone area, an electronic message center sign has the potential to negatively impact the character of the U.S. Route 30 commercial district. Amy Stevens, chief operating officer for Provena, appealed the denial. Standing before the board, she said. "The New Lenox Healing Arts Pavilion is the new home to a wide variety of Provena Saint Joseph medical Center services aimed at improving …

I have been in areas that allow signs, and that really hasn't been the case. Again, this is only for commercial areas, so no houses for sale are going to be part of this if they are in a residential area. The other issue of flashing lights or contents of the screen can be controlled by the village specifically deciding which kind of electronic signs are allowed, and what rate they can refresh, …   more ›
