Park yourself in front of your computer and learn what's changing and what's still being discussed.
On Monday, the Village Board approved an ordinance to restrict on-street parking for trailers and recreational vehicles. Read pages 9-16 of the attached PDF, view the video with Mayor Tim Baldermann or see the chart below for more details. The next night, the Village Plan Commission heard discussion on another related ordinance that would loosen restrictions on parking commercial vehicles in driveways. Residents have been e-mailing the village with questions about how this affects what they can park on the street and in their driveway, and some issues regarding space in driveways have come up. See this chart to sort things out and let us know in the comments if you have any questions.

The Triple Play Concert Series has a big slate for its third annual summer shows.
Are you ready to rock, New Lenox? Mayor Tim Baldermann made the rumors official Monday night at the Village Board meeting and announced that Jefferson Starship and Cheap Trick will join REO Speedwagon this summer, each headlining one of the Triple Play Concert Series shows. The schedule is: All shows are held on the Village Commons, and the park will open at 5:30 p.m. before the show. "I would anticipate people will show up pretty early to get good seats" Baldermann said. Tickets go on sale to people who live in the 60451 zip code March 14 for $50, covering all three shows. After April 30, tickets will be available to everyone for $60. Baldermann said it's possible there would be discounted single-day tickets the day of the show, but that…

He's served the village for 40 years, 26 as administrator.
After 40 years of service in New Lenox—26 as the village's administrator—Russ Loebe will retire this spring. Thank you all for all the support," Loebe said to Village Board members and staff Monday night. "It's truly been a pleasure. But our work's not done yet. Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve New Lenox." In 2009, Loebe announced that he would retire before later rescinding that decision. There were a few reasons for that: First, Loebe's plan was to retire and spend the rest of Mayor Tim Baldermann's term (ending in April) as a contractor at half the salary while also receiving his pension. But the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund changes its pension policy, and it made more sense for Loebe to stay in his position another …

The Village Board heard a proposal to rezone nearly 100 acres for a senior housing development.
Before the village puts a senior housing development in drive, board members want to make sure there's enough room to park. The Village Board heard a proposal Monday night to annex and rezone nearly 100 acres near Laraway and Lincolnway roads. The plans for the Bristol Meadows development include a three-story senior apartment building, townhomes, duplexes and single-family homes. There are also plans for a church, commercial space and a possible park. Because many of the apartments and townhomes would be age-restricted, village board members wondered whether there would be enough parking for seniors and their visitors. “A lot of seniors have family and friends over and it’s not always one car,” village Trustee Annette Bowden said. “…
The board also discussed its on-street trailer parking ordinance and smaller housing sizes.
Below is a recap of what the Village Board discussed during its Monday, Jan. 24 meeting. To see some of our other coverage from the meeting, read about the public hearing on a proposed senior housing development and the recognition of a New Lenox woman who's taking care of her 7-month-old grandson while his parents serve in the Army overseas. In other news: The Village Board approved a three-year agreement with the French Market to be the village's new farmers market operator. The market will still be on Saturdays from May to October in the Village Hall parking lot, and the board hopes it will be a cleaner operation than last year’s market, which struggled in part due to alleged blackballing of vendors by its former manager. After …

After months in committees, the Village Board agreed on trailer and commercial truck parking ordinance.
Residents will get a chance next month to weigh in on a new ordinance the Village Board is considering that would restrict trailer parking on village streets. The ordinance has been through every committee the village has over the past year, but all in the name of making an acceptable ordinance. “I’m sorry it took so long to get here, but I would rather approve an ordinance that is good other than approve one and continue to rehash it,” Mayor Tim Balderman said during the board's Monday night meeting. The new ordinance will restrict commercial trailer parking on and off of village streets. It limits the size of a trailer a resident can have and the amount a resident can have in his or her driveway to 90 inches, or 7 1/2 feet. The ordinance…

About 20 residents voiced concerns and asked questions during a town hall meeting Saturday.
If a town hall meeting was representative of the concerns New Lenox residents have, the big issues for 2011 aren't surprising: road work, safety and the economy. About 20 residents gathered in Village Hall on Saturday to voice concerns and ask questions about the issues that matter to them. The purpose was for people in New Lenox to speak to Village Board members and village staff in an informal setting. The village holds four such meetings each year, with the focus of each one being on a different quadrant of the village. This time, the focus was east of Cedar Road and south of Route 30, though anyone could come to ask questions. After residents shared issues and asked questions, resident Mern Harper offered thanks to the village for …

If voters approve it, the village could choose a supplier other than ComEd and potentially save residents money.
New Lenox residents will face a new question on the April ballot, and if they approve it the village would have the power to choose the cheapest electricity supplier. The Village Board approved the referendum question at its meeting Monday night. The state deregulated the generation of electrical power in 1996, giving residents and the businesses the option to move from ComEd to lower-cost suppliers. And though about 76 percent of the commercial market has moved away from ComEd, few residents have because suppliers could only offer an opt-in program. Starting this year, New Lenox and other municipalities can enter an opt-out program in which all residential accounts within village limits would be moved to an electricity supplier of the …

Walmart opens, LW-West gets playoff win
Although we're just celebrating the two-month anniversary of the launch of New Lenox Patch, there's been lots of news to cover in that short time. Whether it's government decisions, new developments or — wait for it — the economy, there's a lot to talk about in New Lenox. So I'll do my best to recap some of the big news items from the past few months and, to the best of my ability, throughout the year. On Thursday, we published part one, so here's part two: Walmart Comes to Town The opening of the box store giant was the cause of much fanfare, with a grand opening celebration in October that featured the mayor and the Chamber of Commerce. The 177,000-square foot store is open 24 hours and has a full grocery, 30 merchandise departments…

The board approved an agreement with Canadian National Railway that, among other things, will provide quiet zones.
The Village Board unanimously approved a deal with Canadian National Railway on Monday night that will give New Lenox quiet zones, landscaping and safety mechanisms for one of its rail lines at no cost. "It's been a lot of cooperation over the last two and a half years," Village Administrator Russ Loebe said after the meeting. Canadian National bought the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway for $300 million in 2008, and in the last couple of years has reached voluntary mitigation agreements with similar terms with other villages and cities, most recently Ford Heights in November. New Lenox and Will County officials opposed the EJ&E purchase, citing environmental issues, and eventually the county and other villages entered into litigation with …
