The Scouts in New Lenox are going door-to-door until Nov. 6 to deliver grocery bags that need filling for the three local food pantries. Filled grocery bags are scheduled for pick up Nov. 11.
For two more days, the New Lenox Scouts will be delivering grocery bags they hope will be filled with donated food items. Their aim is to collect enough donations to stock the food pantries for the holidays and beyond. The goal is to collect 50,000 food items. They'll stop back on Nov. 11 to collect the donations of non-perishable food. All items will be delivered to the designated sorting and distribution site. From there, everything is expected to be divided up and delivered to three food pantries in town: About 400 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts are participating in the food drive, said Bill Thomson, director of the Scouts' food drive. The Scouts expect to hand out 9,500 bags, which were donated by Central Grocers, Inc…

The ShareFest 2012 Committee is handing out tokens sporting the "Pay It Forward" philosophy.
Gary Cheney, committee member and co-organizer of the sixth annual ShareFest 2012, gets a gleam in his blue eyes when he talks about the newest dimension to the 11 days of giving, which started Sept. 1. Manning the semi-trailer parked in the lot at St. Jude Catholic Church for collections dropped off to benefit a family or a face unknown, Cheney said "we have tokens" for people who volunteer or donate in one way or another during the event that for New Lenox residents is known as 11 days of giving. The tokens read: "Congratulations! You've received a 'Youmanity' token and have been selected to start a chain of kindness." Find out more about how you can help or receive help through ShareFest. Unlike the chain letters that fill the Email …

The Columbine High School tragedy in 1999 stirred the creation of the Asset Building Program used at high school and elementary schools nationwide.
On April 20, 1999, in Littleton, CO, an all-out assault by two seniors from Columbine High School resulted in the death of 12 students and one teacher along with the shooters. In the aftermath, sociologists, psychologists and educators pondered the reasons why such a tragedy unfolded. While no one will ever know exactly what prompted the shooters to stage such a massive attack, Pastor David Hedlin of Peace Lutheran Church in New Lenox is convinced that family connections, faith, love and guidance are crucial when it comes to raising healthy children. In the Lincoln-Way area, there is a team of community leaders who work together to communicate and convey information about these positive assets. The group, which is made up of …

Get a recap of all the action from the Nov. 28 Village Board meeting, including a big check for the township food pantry and an extension for the site plan in the Walmart development.
Plans are on track for New Lenox to annex the strip center containing MorningStar Mission into the village. During a public hearing Monday night, Marilyn Farmer of MorningStar and her attorney answered questions for the Village Board. Planning Administrator Robin Ellis said annexation was originally scheduled to happen a couple years ago, but road improvements in the area concerned the owners. The property is located at 2571 E. Lincoln Hwy, just across Route 30 from the retail center with Target and Lowe's. Jim Homco, a resident who lives just to the north of MorningStar, expressed concern with lighting and screening. MorningStar would build a temporary parking lot behind the building to hold 63 cars, in part because of the impact of Route…

Three of the New Lenox tokens have been registered so far, and these two comments have been made in the online tracking tool: I received my token at a ShareFest Committee Meeting that I attended at 12:00pm on April 24, 2012. The first thing that came to mind was a co-worker named Audrie that was nice enough to bake two delicious cakes for our staff to enjoy. She brought them in this morning and …   more ›
