Fresh Development for New Lenox Town Center

New stores are headed for New Lenox Town Center near Walmart.

The Village Board Monday approved the first reading on a handful of special use permits to accommodate at least four or five new stores in the New Lenox Town Center anchored by Walmart. The development in the 500 block of E. Route 30 continues to attract new businesses to town, said Mayor Tim Baldermann. Pending the signing of final contracts, village officials would not reveal the names of the incoming businesses. However, trustees authorized a special use permit to enable future tenants room for truck docks for three small businesses. Expansion of the retail area is expected in the out-lot near Culver's as well as the in-line stores alongside the Walmart anchor. Baldermann said, "Its great news that despite the recession, we continue to …

New Lenox's Cedar Crossings Acquires Fresh Development

Joliet Oncology Hematology Associates is looking to building east of Silver Cross Hospital.

Joliet Oncology Hematology Associates (JOHA) representatives are working with the Village of New Lenox to build in the Cedar Crossings development along Route 6 just east of Silver Cross Hospital. New Lenox Economic Development Director Nancy Hoehn said Wednesday that JOHA is planning to build a facility immediately east of Silver Cross Hospital. They have already submitted plans. At the moment, they have not made a formal application, but that's expected soon, added Robin Ellis, director of community development. "I'm not sure of the size or the square footage," she said, but a full set of plans are anticipated to be coming through the front door.   "We've been talking to them awhile." Meanwhile, the New Lenox Town Center along Route 30 …

Outlet Mall Progress Slow: Small Business Picking Up the Pace

The Spring Creek Outlet Mall development is working to secure tenants and financing, while small businesses are passing financial hurdles and opening in New Lenox.

The Spring Creek Outlet Mall, a proposed 275,000-square-foot development along Route 6 within the Silver Cross Hospital Campus, was slated to have opened in the fall of 2012. However, difficulty securing tenants and financing have slowed the process. Phase I was the construction of an oval shaped in-door mall, featuring a variety of retail outlets and restaurants.   According to Nancy Hoehn, Village of New Lenox economic development director, project developer Jeff Middlebrook of Center Creek Development, LLC is continuing to market the development. Certainly the economy has delayed the project. At this point, Center Creek developers are attempting to secure enough tenants before breaking ground and beginning work on constructing the …

Route 30 Update: Why the Lanes in Front of Walmart Were Reduced

Although that portion of Route 30 between Marley and Williams was freshly paved before the Walmart development opened in 2010, the state is tearing it up so the road matches the rest of the widening project.

The state continues its work on the Route 30 widening project that will expand the roadway to four lanes. But a case of bad timing has reduced a new section of the road from four to two lanes. Crews have torn up the north side of Route 30 between Marley Road and Williams Street in New Lenox, which is in front of the Charleyhorse restaurant and Walmart.  Although that portion of Route 30 was freshly paved before the Walmart development opened in 2010, it was paved with asphalt and the state wants to match it up with the rest of the widening project, which will be paved with concrete.  "All the Walmart stuff was approved before the state actually pulled the trigger on committing to the Route 30 work," village engineer Will Nash said. "It was…

Yes those are temporary lanes, John. The reason for using concrete over asphalt, is that asphalt is not nearly as dense as concrete, and as trucks pound over that, it can actually pull the asphalt apart and require additional overlays and in the end cost more. And everyday these slow workers spend fixing the temporary lanes is time taken away from finishing the actual project.   more ›

Goodwill Goes Gangbusters on Opening Day

Hundreds of people flooded the new resale store, which opened in New Lenox on March 9. The store offers a donation center and resale items including clothes, toys, books and household items.

It wasn't Black Friday in New Lenox, but the opening of the Goodwill resale store had all the makings of the popular shopping day. By 8 a.m., the parking lot was overflowing with cars, many parked in the mud next to the lot. Hundreds of anxious shoppers waited to bust through the doors. "It's been constant, all day," marketing director Laura Sanders said. "They know there's going to be great value and great selection." That was the sentiment of most shoppers, many who came just to see what they could find. People came from suburbs throughout the Chicago area. "In this day and age, we've got to get a bargain," said Wilmington resident Dawn, who didn't want her last name printed. The resale store offers a selection of clothing, books, toys …

I stopped over at Goodwill around 10 a.m. and the place was MOBBED. Absolutely packed. There was no place to park, people were parking along the road and in a muddy field next to the parking lot. I didn't even attempt to go in.   more ›

Village Board: MorningStar Talks Development; Youth Football Honored

Get a recap of all the action from the Nov. 28 Village Board meeting, including a big check for the township food pantry and an extension for the site plan in the Walmart development.

Plans are on track for New Lenox to annex the strip center containing MorningStar Mission into the village. During a public hearing Monday night, Marilyn Farmer of MorningStar and her attorney answered questions for the Village Board. Planning Administrator Robin Ellis said annexation was originally scheduled to happen a couple years ago, but road improvements in the area concerned the owners. The property is located at 2571 E. Lincoln Hwy, just across Route 30 from the retail center with Target and Lowe's. Jim Homco, a resident who lives just to the north of MorningStar, expressed concern with lighting and screening. MorningStar would build a temporary parking lot behind the building to hold 63 cars, in part because of the impact of Route…

PHOTO GALLERY: Aldi Foods Opens in New Lenox

The discount grocery store brings another shopping option to New Lenox residents, who are happy they won't have to drive to the Aldi stores in Frankfort or Lockport.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, a new Aldi Foods store is bringing discounted grocery shopping to New Lenox. The store officially opens today, Nov. 18, at 351 E. Route 30. Shoppers were invited to sample some Aldi products against their more expensive counterparts Thursday. "We challenge customers to switch and save," Aldi vice president Heather Moore said. "The price gets people in the door but the quality gets them back. It's as good or better than the national brands." Get more store info for the new Aldi Foods in the Patch Places business directory. The 17,886-square-foot store is in the northwest corner of the New Lenox Town Center, where Walmart anchors the developing area. Aldi originally had plans to move into the same spot but …

So would I but I'm not holding my breath any more. Seems like places like this just don't want to be here. Businesses seem to think the only things people want in New Lenox are cheap food, used clothes, and auto parts.   more ›

Goodwill, Chase Bank and Drive-Thrus on Horizon for Walmart Lots

With four businesses now open surrounding the anchoring Walmart off Route 30, the village is moving forward with plans that will bring more businesses to the developing area in New Lenox. At Monday's night's Village Board meeting, the board approved a subdivision of lots in the McVicker's Development, making way for Aldi Foods to build on the northwest end of the area. For more information about the businesses mentioned in this article, click here to go to our business directory. Earlier this month, Chase Bank's site plan was approved and they're now advertising with a "Coming Soon" sign on Route 30.
