New Beginnings Hair Design has a New Look

A whole new shop design attracts an all-ages crowd.

Pamela Swallow, hair stylist and owner of New Beginnings Hair Design, took a bold step when she took over a 30-year-old established shop in 2009. But her confidence and market savvy have trimmed away the risk. First, she worked for four years solely as a hair stylist at the shop, which is located at 346 W. Maple St. She got to know the community and the clientele. She was as attracted to them as they are to her expertise. So in 2009, the it seemed like a natural evolution of her career. She bought the shop from the previous owner, Amy Gerencir. Realistically, the two simply changed roles. Gerencir continues working at the shop as a stylist, after she sold the business. NFL Playoffs: Where to Watch, TV Schedule

The first game features the Cincinnati Bengals at the Houston Texans at 3:30 p.m. (CST). Notre Dame vs. Alabama at 7:30 p.m. (CST) on Monday, Jan. 7.

Although the Bears didn't make it into the playoffs, there are still plenty of teams to watch as they battle it out to take home the title of Super Bowl XLVII Champions. But first, they have to get through the playoffs. Laraway Flea Market Gives Life to 2nd-hand Goods; Vendors Sell Homemade Crafts

Laraway Flea Market is seen as a ripe vineyard for retired seniors and laid-off workers turned entrepreneurs.

A retired emergency room nurse at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, New Lenox's 62-year-old Cindy Markunas considers The Laraway Flea Market in New Lenox Township as an opportunity to profit from a life-long hobby. "I've always loved to do this, even when I was young. I love finding things. I love being a picker," she said. Opened since June, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekends-only, The Laraway Flea Market, 2467 E. Laraway Road, is a great way for Markunas to immerse herself in the spirit of the "American Pickers," a popular PBS television show.
