The Nelson Road extension project is moving forward.
The Nelson Road extension project is beginning to take shape, but accommodating pipeline companies and dealing with the landowner continues to complicate matters. The plan to connect the south and north sides of town along Nelson Road entails the construction of a one-mile extension between Haven Avenue and Illinois Highway. The cost estimate is $4 million, according to Mayor Tim Baldermann. Village Engineer Will Nash said they are in discussion with BP Oil, Inc. staff, attempting to come up with a design that both crosses the pipeline and runs parallel to it. "You can do it. The issue is how close can you be when running parallel?" Restrictions guard the depth of the road where it crosses over the top of the easement, he explained. Read…

It's slow. It's a pain. It's construction.
Road construction projects throughout New Lenox have spread like an air-borne virus. The projects currently underway are: the Route 30 widening project from Williams Street through Harlem Avenue in Frankfort, Cedar Road between First Avenue and Fourth Avenue, and the intersection of Gougar Road and Route 30. The Route 30 project, which is expected to last for at least another year, has forced a shift in traffic from the right lanes to the two middle lanes. That traffic pattern is expected to last for a few months. The South Cedar Road project has just erupted. It's a village campaign that relies on motor fuel tax dollars to fuel sidewalk improvements, curb updates and ultimately asphalt overlays on the side streets, said Will Nash, …

Mayor Tim Baldermann said he hopes to discuss a new public works location with the Village Board at its next meeting, which is April 9.
As the village discusses next year's budget, there's some progress being made on a major component of it: a $24 million in capital improvements that include a new police station, public works facility and the extension of Nelson Road. Last year the New Lenox Village Board voted to increase its sales tax by a 1/2 a cent, bringing the total rate to 8.5 percent, and also increase its utility tax 5 percent on gas and electric to help pay for the projects. Mayor Tim Baldermann said he hopes to discuss the new public works location with the Village Board at its next meeting, which is April 9. The board would talk about it in closed session and take a public vote later. The mayor previously said somewhere along Gougar Road was an option for the …

During a streets committee meeting this week, village trustee Annette Bowden said she witnessed a couple near misses at Illinois Highway and Gear Drive.
New Lenox is looking to improve safety for drivers and students along Illinois Highway. During a streets committee meeting this week, village trustee Annette Bowden said she witnessed a couple near misses at Illinois Highway and Gear Drive. The reason is that the road suddenly narrows at Gear, but the only indication of it is a few arrows pointing left. "I think it's an accident waiting to happen," Bowden said. Drivers might think the extra-wide road is actually two lanes, and that's resulted in stacking of cars, with one treating it as a right-turn lane and blocking the line of sight for drivers on Gear. Village staff suggested possibly striping the right side to indicate that the lane narrows. Public Works Supt. Ron Sly also suggested …

New Lenox officials continue to negotiate a deal with a local landowner that could give the village a portion of land that would be the future site of a new police station.
New Lenox officials continue to negotiate a deal with a local landowner that could give the village a portion of land that would be the future site of a new police station. Mayor Tim Baldermann said the village sent an agreement to Voss Homes a couple weeks ago, but heard back last week with a couple things the landowner wanted changed. Voss Homes owns the 500-acre property southeast of Gougar Road and Haven Avenue, and the village is hoping to get a 20-acre land donation in exchange for extending Nelson Road, which runs through the planned residential area. The village approved a $27 million capital improvements plan in September, and it includes the construction of a new police department and public works facility as well as the …

The village is negotiating a deal with Voss Homes to get 20 acres of land off Gougar Road and Haven Avenue in exchange for paying for the extension of Nelson Road south.
New Lenox is negotiating a deal with a property developer that would save the village money in land purchases for a new police station and public works facility. The village approved a $27 million capital improvements plan last month, which includes the construction of these new facilities as well as the extension of Nelson Road south so it connects between Haven Avenue and Illinois Highway. A location hasn't been announced for the new facilities, but Mayor Tim Baldermann said the large, undeveloped area southeast of Gougar and Haven is very possible. Voss Homes owns the 500-acre property, and the village is hoping to get a 20-acre land donation in exchange for extending Nelson Road, which runs through the planned residential area. Voss …

The plan includes raising sales and utility taxes to help pay for a new police station, public works facility, Nelson Road extension and side street repairs. Channel 6 provides an explanation from Mayor Tim Baldermann.
The New Lenox Village Board unanimously approved a $27 million capital improvements plan Monday that includes increases to sales and utility taxes. Despite some concerns from community members, Mayor Tim Baldermann and the village trustees tried to explain the reasoning behind the projects, which include building a new police station and public works facility, connecting Nelson Road between Illinois Highway and Haven Avenue and completing a 20-year plan for side street repairs. To fund this, the village would increase its sales tax by a 1/2 a cent, bringing the total rate to 8.5 percent, and also increase its utility tax 5 percent on gas and electric. Two questions Baldermann said he's gotten most frequently about these projects were …

The plan includes raising sales and utility taxes to help pay for a new police station, public works facility, Nelson Road extension and side street repairs.
The Village Board will vote tonight on a $27 million capital improvements plan it says is necessary for the future of New Lenox. But some residents have publicly voiced concern over the way it would be funded. The plan includes building a new police station and public works facility, connecting Nelson Road between Illinois Highway and Haven Avenue and completing a 20-year plan for side street repairs. To fund this, the village would increase its sales tax by a 1/2 a cent, bringing the total rate to 8.5 percent, and also increase its utility tax 5 percent on gas and electric. The board expects to approve the financing during its next meeting, which is at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Village Hall. There is time for public comment at the …

Only a few residents came to the Village Board's most recent town hall meeting on Saturday.
Although only a handful of residents came to the Village Board's latest town hall meeting Saturday, a number of issues were addressed, including the new electricity provider, transportation issues and the old lumber yard buildings at Cedar and Route 30. The village holds four such town hall meetings each year, with the focus of each one being on a different quadrant of the village. However, anyone can come ask questions regardless of where they live in town. Here's what was discussed this weekend: The deteriorated buildings slightly northeast of Route 30 and Cedar Road are an "eyesore and a safety issue," Mayor Tim Baldermann said, but it'll take a bit more time to tear them down. The owner of that property was given one year to take down …
