New Lenox School District 122 administrators announced Jan. 16 that Haines School Principal Jackie Miller is retiring at the end of the school year. Her retirement calls for a shift of assignments. Oster-Oakview School Principal Mark Fleming is assigned next year to head-up Haines Elementary School. Previously, Fleming served as assistant principal at Haines. Tragedy Stabs at the Heart of New Lenox: 2012 Year in Review

The community of New Lenox had more than its share of losses this year. It's particularly hard when it's our children.

I'm fairly certain there's never been a Year in Review before for a category of stories that ended in the tragic loss of young lives in New Lenox alone. As a parent and community member, I'll attempt here to honor the lives of those we lost too young. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the children we lost in 2012 from this community. For some, the heartbreak will continue even in the courthouse, as the cases are heard and decisions are handed down.    From a look at this lengthy list, it's obvious that these young lives had touched so many others.  Some wrote eulogies in a song, and others dedicated baseball games or soccer tournaments. Still, the practical approach seemed to drive another needed and helpful outreach …

Soccer Team Mourns Death of 9-Year-Old Member Karly Little

The Legacy Girls Traveling Soccer Team paid tribute to Karly Little, of New Lenox, at practice Monday. Little died in a car accident over the weekend.

Parents huddled together on the sidelines of the soccer field at Lincoln-Way Central High School on Monday while members of the Legacy Girls Traveling Soccer Team practiced. It wasn't the usual friendly routine. Instead, the sidelines were somber while parents commented on the tragedy of a life taken too soon. Nine-year-old Karly Little, of New Lenox, died in a two-car collision Saturday at Route 50 and Kankakee County 6000 N. Road. Teammates from the Legacy team dedicated Monday's practice as a memorial to her. Little, a fourth-grader at Nelson Ridge School, was a passenger in the car driven by her father, Ken Little, 53. Karly was pronounced dead at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee. Her father and sister, 11-year-old Katie, were …

Four others were injured in the accident that took the life of a 9-year-old from Nelson Ridge School. The injured were taken to Riverside Medical Center.

A 9-year-old New Lenox girl was killed and four others were injured in a two-car accident about 10:20 a.m. Saturday in Kankakee County. Karly Little, a 4th-grader at Nelson Ridge School, died as a result of injuries after the car she was riding in collided in the intersection of Kankakee County 6000 N. Road and Route 50 in the area of Bourbonnais and Manteno Townships. She was taken to Provena St. Mary's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her dad, Ken Little, 53, remains in intensive care following surgery, according to a relative.
