New Lenox residents came together this month to vote, to cheer, to give thanks, to cry and more. Take a look at the top 10 stories in Patch for November.
November 2012 is destined to stand out because it brought Americans together for a specific purpose—the Presidential Election. And New Lenox was no different. The 20 precincts in the community saw a record voter turn-out; however, voters here would have preferred Mitt Romney. The American spirit and the realization of the freedoms enjoyed in this nation were lived out in genuine New Lenox style this month. The Scouts collected for a food drive, and those who sacrificed on our behalf were memorialized in a time-honored tradition on Veterans Day at the Village Commons. Crowds filled the bleachers to cheer during the playoffs for football teams at Lincoln-Way West High School and Providence Catholic High School. Later in the month, families…

In the days between, residents took opportunities to discuss the pros and cons of political issues while commenting on policies and more. Part 2 of 3: I review some of the biggest news from June 2012, including a woman stealing residents' flowers and the sentencing of two men who robbed a home while the owners' body decayed inside.
It's believed crime often increases when the weather gets warmer, and this month in New Lenox was no exception. In part two of our three-part Month in Review, I take a look at some of the cops and courts news that made headlines in June 2012. Read part one of the Month in Review. Part 1 of 3: I review some of the biggest news from June 2012, including senior housing and video gambling plans that were shot down by the New Lenox Village Board.
Although school let out for the summer, June 2012 was spent remembering countless students—those who have died too young in the community. The New Lenox community came together to remember local students who died while in school or shortly after. The event was organized after Kim Phillips, a 2009 graduate of Lincoln-Way Central, saw classmate after classmate leave this world. Read, "New Lenox Remembers its 'Fallen Angels' With Balloon Release." Days before the memorial, yet another local student died, adding to a tragic year for the community. Kaitlyn Moak, a 2012 graduate of Providence Catholi High School, died suddenly. We gathered response from friends using social media. Read, "Community Mourns Death of 2012 Providence Graduate …

April was a busy month, and I recount some of the top stories, including Route 30 construction and a feature on ShareFest director Gary Cheney.
April was a busy month for the village and local businesses. First, a couple of them were upset with tax incentives given to Portillo's to build in New Lenox. Eventually, president Dick Portillo announced he would forego the incentives. Then, furious over gas prices that were at times 20 cents higher than neighboring towns, Mayor Tim Baldermann told residents to "go buy your gas somewhere else." And throughout the month, as Route 30 construction picked up again, the village has worked with local businesses to combat the negative consequences. Despite all of this, it was the loss of a beloved teen that impacted the community most. Tommy Schuman died suddenly at age 18, and friends and family mourned the loss in some touching ways. Here are…

I recap the top five news stories of March 2012 and give a couple more editor's picks.
The weather continued its incredible run in March, but not all of the news was good. With a fatal car accident, a gun threat and a malpractice suit, it was a busy month. I recap some of the top stories from March 2012. Silver Cross Opens: February served as a one-month welcome party for Silver Cross Hospital's move to New Lenox. There were galas, tours and lots more, and it all led up to the Feb. 26 opening. Silver Cross Hospital Wows Patients, Families in Transition to New Lenox Senior Housing Debate: A developer proposed income-restricted senior housing for a 3-acre lot near Berkot's, but residents in the adjacent subdivision weren't happy with the plans for the three-story building. I highlight some of the top stories of the past month in New Lenox.
January often brings with it a new way of looking at things. A second chance, a new start. As the calendar changes, we all look ahead to what we hope to accomplish. We begin planning and circling dates. And that's no different here. LA Cafe Mexican restaurant in New Lenox caught fire and was destroyed late in January, but owner Marc Angel vowed he would rebuild. This was an unplanned change and unwanted situation, but it's forced him into a new beginning. Meanwhile, governing bodies are figuring out how to move forward this year with continued uncertainties in the budgets. Chicago has passed water rate hikes onto the suburbs, and the state hasn't paid local school districts their promised amount. With that in mind, as we look ahead to the …
