What is he doing now? Working at his alma mater has been rewarding for former Marist basketball standout Larry Tucker.
When Marist principal Larry Tucker witnesses the success the athletic program has had in recent seasons, he admits to being a little jealous. Marist’s girls volleyball team reached the state quarterfinals for the first time in November, while the boys and girls basketball teams are currently area-ranked, the boys volleyball team captured the state championship during the 2009-2010 season and the football team finished as state runners-up in 2010. “We didn’t get to go down state when I was in high school,” said Tucker, who was a star basketball player at Marist. “I always envy those kids.” Tucker has been Marist’s principal since 1998. Redhawks go 2-1 in the talent-rich Lincoln-Way Central Duals, while Minooka and Bolingbrook both go 3-0.
Saturday's Lincoln-Way Central 12-team wrestling duals in New Lenox had the distinction of featuring four of the top seven ranked teams in Class 3A. And the defending Class 3A state champions, Minooka, had to run into two of those squads, in fourth-ranked Lyons Township and seventh-ranked Marist. While the Lions and RedHawks definitely gave them a run a for their money, Minooka’s Indians beat both squads to wrap up a 3-0 effort on the day. After opening with a 40-15 win over Bradley-Bourbonnais, Minooka beat Lyons Township 33-22 and then captured a 31-24 victory over Marist. The Indians received 3-0 performances from Jake Residori, Kalvin Hill, Josh Pullara and Mitch Morris during the competition. Morris, the Indians' 189-pounder, actually…
The Mighty Macs and Redhawks are pushed to the limit at the Shepard Sectional, but they prevail to meet in Thursday's championship match.
The favorites prevailed in Tuesday's Shepard Sectional, but it was by no means easy for either of them. Marist was first to claim its spot in the Class 4A sectional final in Palos Heights by topping Providence 25-23, 25-18. In the nightcap, Mother McAuley took down Sandburg 25-22, 27-25. Marist (36-2) will meet McAuley (31-7) Thursday night to decide the sectional championship. Providence (21-6) stayed right with Marist in Tuesday's first game by taking advantage of some Redhawk mistakes. However, the Celtics never were able to take a lead, despite clawing their way back from a 6-1 deficit. In Game 2, Marist broke open a tight battle to open up a 20-11 lead. Providence cut that margin to five points before Marist settled the issue. Junior…
