The Hot Read: Marian Catholic raced out to a fast start, and couldn't seem to miss a shot in a 95-34 girls basketball victory over Lincoln-Way Central in the Class 4A Providence Regional on Tuesday. Simone Law was electric, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter. The silver lining for Lincoln-Way Central was its 17-point second quarter, largely a product of near-perfect free throw shooting. Patch’s MVP: Marian Catholic's Jasmine Matthews scored 19 points. She also pulled down five rebounds. Key Stats: Marian Catholic was simply dominant in all phases. The Spartans turned Lincoln-Way Central turnovers into points on the other end. Marian Catholic Leaders: Jasmine Matthews (19 points, 5 rebounds). Simone Law (16 points, 10 rebounds…

Post's shooting, team's tough defense enable Lincoln-Way Central's girls basketball squad to advance in regional action.
Lincoln-Way Central coach Loren Hess said his players were ready and excited to take on Thornwood in Monday night’s Class 4A regional opener at Providence Catholic, even if the T-Birds had more height and plenty of speed. The Knights may not have had the size to match up with the likes of Thornwood center Dorothy Taylor—who recorded nine points and 14 rebounds even while plagued by early foul trouble—or 6-foot-2 reserve Jessica Warren, who came off the bench to pull down eight boards. But Lincoln-Way Central did have a red-hot shooter in Rachel Post to get the team off to a quick start and a pair of senior players who played taller than their stature down low in Hanna Hanlon and Kim Rietveld. Hanlon and Rietveld may have been giving up a …

Want more girls basketball coverage? See a full list of schedules and results for the three New Lenox girls teams at our Regionals Central. The Hot Read: Rachel Post got Lincoln-Way Central off to a great start by hitting her first four three-pointers while tallying 14 of her team’s first 15 points. No. 17 Thornwood closed the gap to 26-19 at the half but couldn’t take advantage of a height advantage as center Dorothy Taylor was in foul trouble much of the night. The 16th-seeded Knights were able to pull away some in the second half as Post stayed hot and Amanda Gagliano added nine points and five rebounds over the final two quarters. Patch’s MVP: Lincoln-Way Central’s Rachel Post (25 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals) tallied seven …

Joliet West 46, Lincoln-Way Central 44. Knights unable to protect fourth-quarter lead, drop thriller on shot by Tigers' Aaliyah Stepney in final seconds.
The Hot Read: After squandering an eight-point fourth-quarter lead, Joliet West scored the game’s final five points to pull out an exciting 46-44 Southwest Suburban Blue girls basketball victory over visiting Lincoln-Way Central Monday. The Tigers snapped a seven-game losing streak. Lincoln-Way Central used an 11-0 run to jump ahead 44-41 with 1:22 remaining, but Joliet West’s Daviona Ervins hit a three-pointer with 1:02 left to even the score at 44-44, and Aaliay Stepney scored the game-winning basket with an inside shot with 25.4 to go. Patch’s MVP: Joliet West sophomore Aaliyah Stepney came up huge in the victory. The 5-foot-8 forward scored a game-high 15 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Key Stat: The game likely was determined …

Eagles erupt for 21 first-quarter points and hit nine three-pointers in 50-32 victory over Knights.
Lincoln-Way Central's girls basketball team dug itself an early hole against Sandburg and never was able to climb out of it. Sandburg scored 21 points in the first quarter and led by double digits most of the way in 50-32 victory in Orland Park on Thursday night. The Eagles (9-11, 4-4) found their shooting stroke midway through the first quarter and went on a 13-2 run in the final 2:41 to build a 21-7 lead. Guards Ashley Yongwirth and Katie Winchel scored 11 of the 13 points. Five of Sandburg's nine three-pointers came in the first quarter. “We’ve shot the ball poorly the last two games,” Eagles coach Chris Hellrung said. “So, it was good to come back to our home court and shoot as well as we did.” Both teams went cold in the second …

Memphis-bound Jailyn Norris leads the Vikings to an 87-39 victory over Lincoln-Way Central in Southwest Suburban Blue action.
If Homewood-Flossmoor senior guard Jailyn Norris could play for the University of Memphis next year the way she played Tuesday night, they would have a freshman phenom on their hands. Norris, who has committed to Memphis, poured in 27 points and was 5-of-8 from the three-point line in only three quarters in an 87-39 victory for Homewood-Flossmoor (15-5, 5-2) over Lincoln-Way Central (7-10, 2-4). The Knights came into the Southwest Suburban Blue matchup hoping to make the Vikings play in the half-court. “They are a little slower and more sluggish offensively when they’re not in transition,” Lincoln-Way Central coach Loren Hess said. The Knights wouldn’t see much of Homewood-Flossmoor in the half-court, however, as the Vikings used the fast-…

Lincoln-Way Central turns a four-point game after three quarters into a 49-28 rout of Tigers in Southwest Suburban Blue girls basketball Thursday night.
Coach Loren Hess’ discussion during the intermission found a willing audience. “It really helped motivate us to come back in the second half and get the win,” said Lincoln-Way Central junior Kayla Pope, who scored 10 of the Knights’ 21 fourth-quarter points. The Knights’ fourth-quarter outburst, underscored by an equally dominant defensive effort, enabled Lincoln-Way Central to break free from Joliet West for a 49-28 girls basketball victory Thursday night in New Lenox. Lincoln-Way Central limited the Tigers to six points over the final 12 minutes after Joliet West had its largest lead of the Southwest Suburban Blue game at 22-17 midway through the third quarter. “I told the girls at halftime that they were being outhustled on their home …

Sophomore Rachel Ruzevich soars as Eagles take down Knights 64-34 in Southwest Suburban Blue girls basketball.
It was as if Sandburg took umbrage at Lincoln-Way Central for scoring on its first three second-quarter possessions. The Eagles' girls basketball team responded with a knockout blow in their 64-34 Southwest Suburban Blue Conference opener Thursday night in New Lenox. Sandburg (3-4, 1-0) erupted for 27 points over the last six and half minutes of the second quarter, hitting 10 of its 14 shots to take a commanding 39-20 lead at the intermission. Rachel Ruzevich scored 10 of her game-high 14 points during the blitz to lead three Sandburg players in double figures. The Eagles seized control with an 11-point unanswered run after Central guard Rachel Post forged the second--and last--tie of the game at 12-12. "We pass the ball around as much as…

Senior center Danielle Barry's career-high 29 points power Celtics past Route 30 rival Knights.
It was a "Barry" special night for Providence. Providence Catholic senior center Danielle Barry scored a career-high 29 points in the Celtics' 61-44 victory over Lincoln-Way Central Monday. And she was as suprised as anyone. "I wasn't necessarily going for 29 points," Barry said. "It's just kind of happened." The Celtics (7-3) demonstrated their dominance early, building a 7-2 after a three-point shot from senior guard Megan Hettinger. The Knights (2-4) retaliated with a three-pointer from senior guard/forward Kim Rietveld to make it 7-5. But Providence pulled out to a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Knights threatened again in the second narrowing Providence's lead to 15-13. But then Barry landed back-to-back-to-back shots …

Shepard senior Jamila McClinton has been playing basketball with Raynisha Dent for many years. So, when her friend suffered a shoulder injury, McClinton took it upon herself to pick up some of the slack. "One of our leading scorers got hurt, so I knew I had to step up as one of the senior leaders and do what I had to do to help us win," McClinton said. "(Dent) is like my right hand man, and she told me I needed to step up. I knew I had to come out and score." McClinton scored a game-high 15 points Friday and added two blocks, two rebounds and a steal to help Shepard beat Lincoln-Way Central 35-33 in the Lincoln-Way Central Thanksgiving Tournament. The Astros improved to 1-1 in the tournament, which concludes Saturday, and 2-2 overall after…
