12 high schools, from Palos Hills to Bradley-Bourbonnais, participated in the March 1 Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Special Games in New Lenox.
The 12th Annual Special Games at Lincoln-Way Central High School brought together students involved in special education programs from 12 high schools in the region. The field house was alive March 1 with students and peer helpers for the special games event that featured plenty of clowning around from professional sports teams mascots, including the White Sox, and high school mascots. The 12 schools participating in the event are: Andrew, Bolingbrook, Bradley-Bourbonnais, Joliet Township, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Lincoln-Way West, Lockport, Sandburg, Stagg, and Homewood-Flossmoor High School. New Lenox's Tommy Schuman, who died at the age of 18 from an undetected cardiac condition nearly a year ago, will not be forgotten. A Special Games Leadership Award will mark his legacy.
The 12th Annual Special Games at Lincoln-Way Central High School this year has a new feature—the Tommy Schuman Leadership Award. Schuman, a baseball player and golfer at LWC, was voted athlete of the year shortly after the tragedy of his unexpected death on March 31, 2012. On March 1 at the Special Games, the Tommy Schuman Leadership Award will be presented to a deserving senior student leader from each of the participating schools. The award recognizes student leaders for their outstanding efforts and work in and out of the classroom. I am a peer trainer for Joliet central, and I will be the first so say this is an experience I will never forget. Being a part of the games assisting my partner and other students and peers has given me great pride.
