Glenbard West 10, Lincoln-Way East 8: Henry Haeffner's first-half passing helped the Hilltoppers build an early lead and their defense stopped the Griffins time and again in the second half.
The 7A state football championship came down to the final second, but it ended like it started for Lincoln-Way East and quarterback Tom Fuessel. He was battered by the tough Glenbard West defense to end the game. His counterpart—Henry Haeffner—completed 10-of-13 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Glenbard West’s 10-8 victory over Lincoln-Way East. Haeffner stole the offensive spotlight in the title game at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Haeffner threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Nathan Marcus with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hayden Lekacz added a 27-yard field goal as the Hilltoppers (14-0) extended their lead to 10-0 at halftime. See a full box score for statistics and drive summaries on IHSA. The Class 7A Illinois football championship is a game two years in the making. After Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East were upset as favorites in 2011, they found their way back in 2012.
I could have written this column last year. After all, Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East were destined to meet in the Class 7A state championship game. They were both 9-0 heading into the playoffs, were ranked Nos. 2 and 4 in state by The Chicago Tribune and were on opposite sides of the 7A bracket, ensuring a likely showdown between the Hilltoppers and the Griffins. Then, in the second round of the 2011 playoffs, the offenses (which both averaged 38 points per game heading into that round) sputtered. Lake Zurich topped Glenbard West, 10-3, while Wheaton-Warrenville South blanked East 7-0. School Board meeting highlights: Destination Excellence awards, closing the fiscal year, public hearing for proposed 2012-2013 budget
The Lincoln-Way School District 210 Board of Education discussed its 2012-13 budget Thursday, closing the previous year with a $3.2 million deficit. The main order of business was the closing of the district's 2011-2012 budget and the passage of a resolution to display the proposed 2012-2013 budget for public inspection through Sept. 11, followed by a public hearing. The board will vote on the approval of the budget on Sept. 13. The district closed its 2011-2012 budget with a deficit of $3,274,621 as of June 30. Supt. Lawrence Wyllie said the deficit was caused by a discrepancy between the amount of tax dollars and categorical grants the district was supposed to receive and the amount that was actually dispersed. "The categoricals, we …

Lincoln-Way East graduate Erik Rancatore and Central graduate Megan Flynn were both involved in musicals in high school. On their seven-year anniversary, he took her back to where they met for a surprise proposal.
Erik Rancatore failed geometry during high school at Lincoln-Way East, but he says it's the best thing that ever happened to him. "I had to take summer school ... and I met the love of my life there," he said. On Tuesday, Rancatore celebrated his seventh anniversary with Lincoln-Way Central graduate Megan Flynn by surprising her with an engagement ring. The two started dating in high school and continued to do so while attending Southern Illinois University. But for the anniversary, Flynn had no idea what to expect. Rancatore blindfolded her and drove her from their Chicago home to New Lenox, where the two met during summer school. They continued to get to know each other because they were both involved with the musical programs, and …

When Lincoln-Way East first opened its doors, athletic director Dave Brost set out to assemble a championship team. He is retiring this month after spending 13 years on the job and helping put the Griffins on the Illinois athletic map.
Dave Brost didn’t write the book on how to be a successful high school athletic director. He learned the job as he went along. Brost, 62, is retiring in May after working for 19 years as an athletic director, the last 13 at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort. During that time, he has guided one of the most successful and most diverse athletic programs in Illinois. East has won four state championships during his tenure and captured eight first- or second-place trophies in IHSA state tournament competitions. The Griffins have gone from a what—what’s a Griffin? Answer: A mythological creature with the head of an eagle the body of a lion. To a who: East teams have become fixtures at the top of many state-wide polls since then-coach …
