Obamacare Upheld by Supreme Court: Take Our Poll

Is this ruling good for America, or will Obamacare be a tragic mistake? Take the Patch poll and share your views with fellow south suburban residents.

The Supreme Court decided on a 5-4 vote released Thursday that the Affordable Care Act, which mandates every American to purchase health insurance, is constitutional. The Supreme Court ruled that the federal government can levy a "tax" on individuals who do not buy into the system. The individual health care mandate is the key provision in Obamacare, and many are calling it a huge win for the president as we approach the November elections. The Obama administration touted the law passed in March 2010 as its signature legislative achievement. Chief Justice John G. Roberts provided the decisive vote. The judges said the individual mandate cannot be upheld under the commerce clause, but that Congress's ability to tax and spend in this case is…

Helping the Blind See Again: New Lenox Man Volunteers for Lifetime in Latin America

Bob Martin has spent the last 36 years providing vision and health care to thousands of people in Latin America, often helping the blind see again.

Bob Martin has been recognized as Greatest Person of the Day on The Huffington Post, a feature that spotlights ordinary and extraordinary people in Patch communities whose acts of courage, determination, volunteerism and compassion have made a difference. These are people who inspire and energize others to strengthen their communities and improve lives. Escaping the doldrums of a summer job mixing soil for a local nursery, New Lenox resident Bob Martin sought adventure and goodwill in South America.  He was 15 at the time, canoeing down rivers with a bunch of teenagers, taking in unique food and culture and meeting the faces of political strife. The experience was enough to draw him back, but the linchpin was, and still is, the thousands …

Bob's last statement in the article is what I always tell my kids. There has to be more to life that just eating out and shopping. Going to Starbucks and the healthclub. Living from vaction to vacation. I feel that if the Lord has given me a comfortable living to raise my kids, good health and 2 strong hands, it's meant to help those who cannot. You have to give back. Keep up the good work, Bob! …   more ›

Biggert Wins Big in 13th District Race

Republican Judy Biggert wins over Democratic challenger Scott Harper with more than 70 percent of the vote in Cook County.

Judy Biggert will be returning to Washington D.C. for her seventh term as U.S. Representative for the 13th District. Biggert, 73, won with 72 percent of the vote in Cook County, 67 percent in DuPage and about 58 percent in Will against Democrat challenger Scott Harper, 49, for the predominantly Republican district, which includes Orland Park, Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Naperville, Lisle and other southwestern suburbs. "This election wasn't about one race or one person," Biggert said after late numbers came through in her favor. "People want a new direction and the Republicans can take that path.
