The Bears didn't look good in their first game against the Packers, and they've looked pretty awful the past two weeks. At 8-5, Chicago's game this weekend against Green Bay carries enormous consequences. Predict the score prior to Sunday's Bears game. The reader who correctly guesses the score, or comes closest to guessing the score, will get a Patch tote bag. Chicago Bears fans, and even Packers fans, gathered at local watering holes to celebrate the holidays and watch the NFC North foes face off.
The Chicago Bears needed a Christmas miracle to top their bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers, at Lambeau Field on Christmas Day. Unfortunately for Bears fans, and the team, the green and gold played Grinch on Christmas, dealing the Bears a 35-21 loss on the “frozen tundra” of Lambeau. The loss didn't seem to dampen the spirits of fans around the south suburbs though, as Bears fans, and the occasional Cheese Head, celebrated the holiday and the game at local watering holes. There was a sparse crowd at Lassen's, but the drinks were flowing and the Bears were on. Both were good things for bartender Joe Escalante. In the sports world, there is a tendency for all of us to get caught up in hero worship. The big names and big stars are people all of us follow, if only to satisfy our celebrity curiosity craving. What does Bulls guard Derrick Rose think about getting back to work now that the NBA labor dispute has been settled? How much money did he lose during the strike? Who does a better touchdown dance? Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Or the two hopelessly out-of-touch folks in the television insurance company ad? You know the ones: they mimic Rodgers’ championship belt routine by working their hands across their midsections in a “Discount Double Check” move. Bullet Points: I'm imagining a second-grader belting out Lynyrd Skynyrd's classic Gimme Back My Bullets following the discovery of a .44-caliber bullet on the bus ride to school in Tinley Park last week. In tracking down the bullet-toting student, school officials decided to go to the onboard surveillance tape, only to find it missing. As part of a Patch vs. Patch wager, I must apologize to Wisconsin for betting on the Bears last weekend.
Last week, I confidently agreed to a bet with Lyssa Beyer, the Patch editor in Port Washington-Saukville, Wisc., over who would win the big Bears-Packers game Sunday. So confident, in fact, I thought the Bears would win 34-21. We posted our top three reasons why our team would win, and even got our elected officials in on the action. The agreement was that if our team lost, we would have to put on the other team's jersey and issue an apology to the opposing Patch town. We all know how the game turned out. So here's your apology video, Cheeseheads. Enjoy the Super Bowl while you still have a real team in season.

We teamed up with a Patch site in Wisconsin, and Mayor Baldermann sported a Packers T-shirt at Monday's Village Board meeting.
If you happen to tune into the latest Village Board meeting on Channel 6 and miss the beginning, you're probably wondering what the (heck) is Mayor Tim Baldermann doing with a Packers T-shirt? Like some other Bears fans might have been on Monday, Baldermann was making good on a friendly wager that resulted from the Bears 21-14 loss to the Packers in the NFC Championship. Green Bay came into Soldier Field and dominated for most of the game, though third-string quarterback Caleb Hanie came off the bench and made a valiant effort to get our Bears back into it. No matter the score, we have a winner in Patch's "Predict the Score" contest. Dean Casper, of Orland Park, who predicted 24-14, was just three points off the final score of 21-14.
