Predict the Score: Chicago vs. Green Bay

The Bears have a huge game against the rival Packers this weekend. Can you guess the score? Closest prediction to the outcome wins a Patch tote bag!

The Bears didn't look good in their first game against the Packers, and they've looked pretty awful the past two weeks. At 8-5, Chicago's game this weekend against Green Bay carries enormous consequences.  Predict the score prior to Sunday's Bears game. The reader who correctly guesses the score, or comes closest to guessing the score, will get a Patch tote bag. At the end of the season, we'll have a random drawing among the weekly winners for a larger prize. • If you’re a Patch reader, simply comment on the bottom of this article with your name and what you think the final score of the next Bears game will be. (Example: Benny Bears Fan, Bears 102, Packers 0.) • All entries need to be received by the start of the game. Because the Bears' …

Add the Punchline to Our Doctor and Bear Cartoon

If you've got wit, add your punchline to Patch's weekly comic and win a personalized print.

Are you blessed with insight and good humor? Or just bored today? Share your wit with your south suburban neighbors by entering Patch's comic caption challenge. Just add your dialogue for today's comic in the comment section of this post. Our only requirement is that you keep it clean! At week's end, we'll pick the winning punchline based on how many of us here at Patch giggle and smile at your contribution. The user who produces the winning punchline will get a personalized proof of the comic, with the winning words and a credit line, from cartoonist Chuck Ingwersen and Patch. Congratulations to Tom, who provided the winning punchline to last week's Little Red Wagon comic: My other car is a Big Wheel.

I can answer that one Justin. Having lived in Chicago (Chicago, not the 'burbs) for 10 years, and now in Wisconsin for 11. 1) Sales tax. No tax on groceries in Wisconsin. 2) Food prices. I don't have a % number, but all food is MUCH cheaper in Wisconsin. This morning I bought: $2.09 for a gallon of 2% milk. $1.09 for a dozen eggs. 3) Pleasant surroundings and people - no comparison really, being …   more ›

Christmas and the Bears: A Match Made For Bars

Chicago Bears fans, and even Packers fans, gathered at local watering holes to celebrate the holidays and watch the NFC North foes face off.

The Chicago Bears needed a Christmas miracle to top their bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers, at Lambeau Field on Christmas Day. Unfortunately for Bears fans, and the team, the green and gold played Grinch on Christmas, dealing the Bears a 35-21 loss on the “frozen tundra” of Lambeau. The loss didn't seem to dampen the spirits of fans around the south suburbs though, as Bears fans, and the occasional Cheese Head, celebrated the holiday and the game at local watering holes. There was a sparse crowd at Lassen's, but the drinks were flowing and the Bears were on. Both were good things for bartender Joe Escalante. He had another reason to have holiday cheer despite the Bears' poor showing. His parents, Alfredo and Elizabeth, came to their …

Predict the Score of the Bears-Packers Christmas Showdown

The Patch reader who correctly guesses the score of Sunday's game gets a Patch ball cap.

The Chicago Bears (7-7) will take on their rivals, the Green Bay Packers (13-1), this Sunday — and Patch is getting in on the action. Predict the Score prior to Sunday's Bears game. The reader who correctly guesses the score, or comes closest to guessing the score, will get a Patch ball cap. • If you’re a Patch reader, simply comment on the bottom of this article with your name and what you think the final score of the next Bears game will be. (Example: Benny Bears Fan, Bears 102, Packers 0.) • All entries need to be received by the start of the game. Since the Bears' next game is at 7:20 p.m. Sunday (CST), we'll need all entries by then. • To determine the winner, we will take the difference between actual points scored and predicted …

The Sports Report

Expand Your Sports Horizon to Include Worship of Local Heroes

It goes without saying that only a select few make it in professional sports. But many more folks "make it" through their heroic work in our local communities. And they deserve your worship, too.

In the sports world, there is a tendency for all of us to get caught up in hero worship. The big names and big stars are people all of us follow, if only to satisfy our celebrity curiosity craving. What does Bulls guard Derrick Rose think about getting back to work now that the NBA labor dispute has been settled? How much money did he lose during the strike? Who does a better touchdown dance? Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Or the two hopelessly out-of-touch folks in the television insurance company ad? You know the ones: they mimic Rodgers’ championship belt routine by working their hands across their midsections in a “Discount Double Check” move. I’m here to tell you there is nothing wrong with a little hero worship. The trick is to …

Gimme Back My Bullets, I Need Them for Show-And-Tell

Bullets on a school bus. Love dolls at the mall. $200 bus rides. And stolen rent checks. If you missed a day on Patch, you missed a lot. Let's catch you up.

Every Monday, Good Read keeps you in the know with the Southland’s must-read stories and then some. Bullet Points: I'm imagining a second-grader belting out Lynyrd Skynyrd's classic Gimme Back My Bullets following the discovery of a .44-caliber bullet on the bus ride to school in Tinley Park last week. In tracking down the bullet-toting student, school officials decided to go to the onboard surveillance tape, only to find it missing. Although the second-grader and fifth-grader who found the bullet Tuesday afternoon as the bus was pulling out of Tinley Park's Fulton School turned it over to the bus driver, the bus company didn't notify the district for nearly 24 hours. By then, the district had already heard about it from the children's …

Editor's Notebook

My End of the Bargain: Sorry, Cheeseheads

As part of a Patch vs. Patch wager, I must apologize to Wisconsin for betting on the Bears last weekend.

Last week, I confidently agreed to a bet with Lyssa Beyer, the Patch editor in Port Washington-Saukville, Wisc., over who would win the big Bears-Packers game Sunday. So confident, in fact, I thought the Bears would win 34-21. We posted our top three reasons why our team would win, and even got our elected officials in on the action. The agreement was that if our team lost, we would have to put on the other team's jersey and issue an apology to the opposing Patch town. We all know how the game turned out. So here's your apology video, Cheeseheads. Enjoy the Super Bowl while you still have a real team in season.

Baldermann Makes Good on Bears-Packers Wager

We teamed up with a Patch site in Wisconsin, and Mayor Baldermann sported a Packers T-shirt at Monday's Village Board meeting.

If you happen to tune into the latest Village Board meeting on Channel 6 and miss the beginning, you're probably wondering what the (heck) is Mayor Tim Baldermann doing with a Packers T-shirt? Like some other Bears fans might have been on Monday, Baldermann was making good on a friendly wager that resulted from the Bears 21-14 loss to the Packers in the NFC Championship. "I didn't think I had much of a chance of winning," he said. "But the Bears did well and kept it close." New Lenox Patch teamed up with Port Washington-Saukville Patch in Wisconsin last week to have a little fun before the Bears-Packers game. And part of the deal was that New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann and Port Washington Mayor Scott Huebner had a friendly wager in which …

Orland Park Man Wins Patch's 'Predict the Score' Contest!

Dean Casper comes closest with his 24-14 prediction of a Packers victory over the Bears, winning a $150 Target gift card.

Those @#$&! Packers! Green Bay came into Soldier Field and dominated for most of the game, though third-string quarterback Caleb Hanie came off the bench and made a valiant effort to get our Bears back into it. No matter the score, we have a winner in Patch's "Predict the Score" contest. Dean Casper, of Orland Park, who predicted 24-14, was just three points off the final score of 21-14. He wins the $150 Target gift card. He was one of three Patch readers to predict the Packers would beat the Bears in our contest. Todd Bunge was very confident in the Packers, guessing 34-17, 16 total points off the mark. Darwin Vermiere figured a few field goals would be in the mix, guessing 24-17, six points off the mark. But Casper was just a field goal …
