While Schoolgate Road homeowners spent Saturday repainting garage doors, scraping vulgarity off windows and chatting about the March 15 rash of neighborhood vandalism and arson, New Lenox police had already arrested a 17-year, gang-affiliated man who will be charged as an adult for his involvement. Christian Velazquez, 17, of the 700 block of Lake Road, was booked into Will County Jail about 1 p.m. Saturday and charged with two counts of arson, residential burglary and criminal damage to property—all felonies, according to New Lenox Deputy Police Chief Robert Pawlicz. Schoolgate Road residents are grappling with a graffiti mess and more.
Residents of the 700 block of Schoolgate Road and the immediate vicinity are up in arms tonight about a rash of vandalism that marked their cars and garages with spray-painted graffiti. One family is dealing with more—the deck to their house was set on fire. New Lenox Fire Protection District said the call came in about 6:09 a.m. Friday and was doused in about 15 minutes. The cause of the blaze is being investigated; neighbors say it was arson. New Lenox police have not yet released information concerning the event that involved multiple homes and car owners. A resident on the 100 block of Michael Lane in New Lenox discovered juvenile graffiti covering his house, garage and fence on May 11. The resident told the Will County Sheriff's Department that unknown people used orange spray paint to draw penises and write juvenile words on the home. On the front of the home, there were drawings of two 24-inch penises, and on the side of the home was the word "poop." There was a smiley face with a penis drawn on the garage and the words "What's up wiener" on the fence. The resident told police he did not suspect any neighbors and didn't know who did this.
