New Lenox Wins Home Town Award for Unprecedented 2nd Year in a Row

The prestigious award was won for an outpouring of community support of ShareFest 2011.

For the second year in a row, the Village of New Lenox was presented the Governor's Home Town Award at a ceremony Thursday at the Governor's Mansion in Springfield. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) administer the program that found ShareFest 2011 something to shout about. Last year the village won for Preparing Citizens for Emergencies and Disaster, a program created and facilitated through the Safe Communities America Coalition and Citizen Corps Council.   Readers might like: While ShareFest has just now completed its seventh year, ShareFest 2011 was the year it expanded partnership with more than 70 different organizations and gathered hundreds of volunteers. Emergency Volunteers Get High Recognition From Village, State

New Lenox's Community Emergency Response Team, created just a couple years ago, is pulling in recognition as the top team in the state for emergency preparedness.

For a group of volunteers that gives countless hours to the village, New Lenox gave a bit of time back Monday to recognize the Community Emergency Response Team. CERT, which just graduated its sixth class of emergency-trained residents, was honored during Monday's Village Board meeting for receiving the Governor's Home Town Award for its "Preparing Citizens for Emergencies and Disasters" program. The prestigious award was presented during a ceremony at the Executive Mansion in Springfield last month and recognizes volunteers for their work to improve their communities. You always have articles about the CERT people, but what about the Emergency Services men and women who have been around town for years now who have helped police officers with traffic accidents, the community with events such as Proud American Days and now the concerts, and parades.
