Ferry Does 'Little Things' for Marian

Alanna Ferry was everywhere in the Spartans' one-side rout of Providence Catholic in the Celtics' Class 4A Regional final.

Simone Law, Jamie Johnson and Jasmine Matthews were all in double figures for Marian Catholic on Thursday night.
But championship basketball teams invariably have indispensable role players who contribute in a variety of ways. Alanna Ferry was certainly that in New Lenox during the Spartans’ 72-41 win over Providence Catholic in the Class 4A regional final. During the Spartans’ 16-2 run to close out the first quarter and essentially send the squad to the Lincoln-Way North Sectional on Tuesday to face Homewood-Flossmoor, Ferry, a junior starting guard, triggered two steals, grabbed three rebounds and nailed a bomb from beyond the arc.  “That’s what we try to do: make defensive stops and push it on offense,” Ferry said of the Spartans’ …

Girls Basketball: Marian Catholic Storms Past Providence for Regional Crown

Marian Catholic 72, Providence Catholic 41. Simone Law leads three Spartans in double figures in the Providence Regional final.

The Hot Read: Thursday night’s Class 4A Sandburg girls basketball regional final was decided in the opening eight minutes. Marian Catholic, the top seed of the Lincoln-Way North sectional complex, blitzed the host Celtics with an 18-4 run to conclude the first quarter. Marian forced six steals in the opening quarter to trigger multiple easy baskets in transition. The Marian defense was such a destructive force that Sandburg did not reach double digits until 3:17 remained until halftime. Jamie Johnson, one of three double-figure scorers for Marian, had a put-back at the second-quarter buzzer to give the Spartans a commanding 37-11 lead at halftime. The second half was much the same, enabling Marian coach Annie Byrne to substitute liberally …

Extra Points: Eight Seniors Put Building Blocks in Place at Lincoln-Way West

The record will show first graduating class wins 39 games, regional title for Warriors.

MORRIS–Years from now, members of the Lincoln-Way West girls basketball team won’t remember much about the first couple of varsity seasons. However, eight seniors built a solid foundation for the program that includes back-to-back 19-plus win seasons and a regional championship. “The senior class put the building blocks in place for future years to come,” Lincoln-Way West coach Ryan White said. “I think they’ve done a great job with that.” They include Sara Losacco, Ashley Sichak, Taylor Blyth, Michelle Seliga, Sam Villa, Jessica McDonald, Kaitlyn Ray and Nikki Sieger. Ray scored 14 points during her final high school game, a 58-48 loss to Morris on Wednesday night in semifinal play at the Class 4A Morris Regional. Her back-to-back three-…

Analysis: Tempo Key as Providence Prepares for No. 1 Seed Marian

The Celtics used tough defense and transition to create shots against Richards and will have to keep that up in the regional final.

Despite being the home team in Thursday's regional championship game, Providence Catholic is a big underdog. Marian Catholic, the No. 1 seed, put on a show in the semifinals Tuesday and made it clear that the Celtics will have anything but an advantage. Marian's 95-34 win against Lincoln-Way Central featured a physical game and the team turned Knights' turnovers into transition buckets. Providence Catholic beat Richards 47-37 on Tuesday using some fast-break scoring but also a great inside-out attack that got even better as the game went on. Tempo will be key in the regional final. "We have to play a certain rhythm," Providence coach Eileen Copenhaver said after the win against Richards. "I thought we did a good job on defense early and …

Girls Basketball: Providence Tops Richards in Regional Semis

Providence Catholic 47, Richards 37. The Celtics' inside-out game was too much for the Bulldogs.

The Hot Read: Providence Catholic used its defense to bat a lot of balls early on and amass blocks and steals. That allowed the Celtics to run Richards and open up a 23-16 lead at the break. Providence senior Danielle Barry set the tone inside with five blocks and two steals. The Celtics used the pick and roll early and the inside game opened up shots for Providence that eventually started falling in the second half. Richards star Brianna LeBeau got looks, but like many of her teammates struggled from the field, shooting just 3-for-12. Patch’s MVP: Barry for her all-around performance. She led all scorers with with 16 points and added seven rebounds and five blocks. Honorable mention to the Celtics' Emily Persak, who buried Richards with …

Girls Basketball: Marian Lays Down 'Law' on L-Way Central

Marian Catholic 95, Lincoln-Way Central 34. Spartans' Simone Law scores 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter of Class 4A regional semifinal at Providence.

The Hot Read: Marian Catholic raced out to a fast start, and couldn't seem to miss a shot in a 95-34 girls basketball victory over Lincoln-Way Central in the Class 4A Providence Regional on Tuesday. Simone Law was electric, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter. The silver lining for Lincoln-Way Central was its 17-point second quarter, largely a product of near-perfect free throw shooting. Patch’s MVP: Marian Catholic's Jasmine Matthews scored 19 points. She also pulled down five rebounds. Key Stats: Marian Catholic was simply dominant in all phases. The Spartans turned Lincoln-Way Central turnovers into points on the other end. Marian Catholic Leaders: Jasmine Matthews (19 points, 5 rebounds). Simone Law (16 points, 10 rebounds…

Analysis: L-W Central Makes Most of its Matchups with Taller T-Birds

Post's shooting, team's tough defense enable Lincoln-Way Central's girls basketball squad to advance in regional action.

Lincoln-Way Central coach Loren Hess said his players were ready and excited to take on Thornwood in Monday night’s Class 4A regional opener at Providence Catholic, even if the T-Birds had more height and plenty of speed. The Knights may not have had the size to match up with the likes of Thornwood center Dorothy Taylor—who recorded nine points and 14 rebounds even while plagued by early foul trouble—or 6-foot-2 reserve Jessica Warren, who came off the bench to pull down eight boards. But Lincoln-Way Central did have a red-hot shooter in Rachel Post to get the team off to a quick start and a pair of senior players who played taller than their stature down low in Hanna Hanlon and Kim Rietveld. Hanlon and Rietveld may have been giving up a …

No. 17 Thornwood closed the gap to 26-19 at the half but couldn’t take advantage of a height advantage as center Dorothy Taylor was in foul trouble much of the night. The 16th-seeded Knights were able to pull away some in the second half as Post stayed hot and Amanda Gagliano added nine points and five rebounds over the final two quarters. Patch’s MVP: Lincoln-Way Central’s Rachel Post (25 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals) tallied seven …
