What goes into a 20-minute fireworks show? Up to 12 hours of work and a whole lot of preparation. We got an inside look at Melrose Pyrotechnic's work on the New Lenox fireworks show.
Although a fireworks show only lasts about 20 minutes, the prep work that goes into it can last up to 12 hours. We got an inside look at everything that happens behind the scenes to create a show. In 2011, I met up with Melrose Pyrotechnics of Frankfort to see how they put on the New Lenox fireworks show. Ryan Miarecki, Robert Perritano and Jacob Ziada of Melrose Pyrotechnics showed up to the Village Commons at about 8:30 a.m. and showed Patch the step-by-step process of rigging a show. MORE VIDEO

If you want to watch the fireworks finale at the Village Commons once again, or have your own pictures from the show, check this out!
When someone says the phrase "4th of July" to me, the first image that pops into my head is colorful, exploding fireworks. Which was better: the 2011 or 2012 fireworks finale? The 2012 fireworks finale at the Village Commons made that visualization a reality. If you either enjoyed the finale as much as I did or could not attend the event, you can discuss it with your friends who did by watching the video above. Do you have photos from the show or at the event? Share them on Patch! What did you think of the fireworks show? Are there any improvements that could be made for next year, or was it as close to perfect as possible? Tell us in the comments below.

It's time to celebrate our nation's independence, and you don't have to go far to see a professional fireworks show. New Lenox's Fourth of July celebration begins at 7 p.m. at the Village Commons with a performance by Bernie Glim & Country Roads. The Joliet American Legion will present at 8:30 p.m., and the fireworks show is at 9:30 p.m. Southland Fireworks Shows: Looking for other fireworks displays in the south suburbs? We recap top headlines from the week, and talk about recent videos on Patch.
YouTube is the second biggest search engine, next to Google. People can find videos of just about anything they want, and upload their personal videos to share with others. In New Lenox, we could be the YouTube of your town. Obviously, on a much, much smaller scale. But the more videos we have on Patch, the happier I'll be. And to do that, we need your help. As readers, I know there are things you're recording. It could be a cute video of your pet doing a trick, a game-winning hit your kid had at his last baseball game or your next entry to America's Funniest Videos. In the last week, we had a few big events in town and got a lot of video footage for them. Here are a few of my favorites: VIDEO: Jim Peterik Sings 'Eye of the Tiger' to Devin…

Plenty of residents set off illegal fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend, but no fines were handed down.
If you were in New Lenox over the holiday weekend, there's a good chance you heard fireworks—and I'm not talking about the professional show at the Village Commons. Down my block, there were fireworks going off until 2 a.m. most nights over the weekend. I saw some off in the distance, too, perhaps coming from near Schoolhouse Manor. Other readers chimed in and said they heard neighbors setting off fireworks, too. In Illinois, that's illegal and can carry a hefty fine and even some jail time, but New Lenox Police reported that no fines or citations were written over the weekend. Sgt. Hilary Davis said the department received some calls from residents, but that after investigating the area, no citations were written. She added that police …

In case you couldn't make New Lenox's fireworks show, or you just want to see it one more time, we've got the finale and the entire show for you.
For me, there's not many better ways to cap off a holiday than to watch a fireworks show; among other reasons, it's what makes the Fourth of July my favorite holiday. And just to be clear, by fireworks show I mean professional fireworks show. Sorry, guys down the block who were blowing up things until midnight. I really enjoyed being out at New Lenox's fireworks show, and if you weren't able to make it or want another look, we've got the finale for you. If you're so inclined, we also have the full 20-minute show. Keep in mind that you'll have to bear through some minimal unfocused shots when the camera was adjusting to the fireworks, as well at Katy Perry's song Firework, which, let's be honest, just isn't any good.
