The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
By David Mills One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. In 2011, 323 people were killed by alcohol-related crashed in Illinois, which makes up 35 percent of the 918 total crash …

TUESDAY, APRIL 23 Sheila Townsend, 36, of the 400 block of North Center Street, Joliet, was charged with retail theft, according to a report. She is accused of taking $35 wroth of merchandise at about 10:07 p.m. from Wal-Mart, 500 Block of East Route 30. MONDAY, APRIL 22 Jennifer Thompson, 29, of the 700 block of Madison Street, Joliet, was charged with driving under the influence, driving without insurance and speeding, according to a report. She was stopped at about 2:33 a.m. near the intersection of Route 30 and Vine Street for speeding. During the stop, police noticed signs the driver was under the influence of alcohol. New Lenox police arrested a 21-year-old Joliet woman and charged her with aggravated battery.
A disturbance April 17 at Silver Cross Hospital resulted in the arrest of 21-year-old Laquandra Archer, of Joliet. She was charged with aggravated battery. According to New Lenox police, Archer was taken into custody about 7:50 p.m. after a man at Silver Cross Hopital, in the 1900 Block of Silver Cross Boulevard, complained that she battered him. She was charged with aggravated battery. No further details of the incident were noted in the report. Archer was booked into Will County jail where bond was set at $70,000. SUNDAY, MARCH 31 Lawrence P. Spaulding, 35, of the 2400 block of Cattleman Drive in New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence, disobeying a stop sign and failing to signal, according to a report. Police reportedly saw Spaulding commit several moving violations at about 1:12 a.m. in the 100 block of Veterans Parkway and, later, determined he was under the influence.
