Marian Catholic 72, Providence Catholic 41. Simone Law leads three Spartans in double figures in the Providence Regional final.
The Hot Read: Thursday night’s Class 4A Sandburg girls basketball regional final was decided in the opening eight minutes. Marian Catholic, the top seed of the Lincoln-Way North sectional complex, blitzed the host Celtics with an 18-4 run to conclude the first quarter. Marian forced six steals in the opening quarter to trigger multiple easy baskets in transition. The Marian defense was such a destructive force that Sandburg did not reach double digits until 3:17 remained until halftime. Jamie Johnson, one of three double-figure scorers for Marian, had a put-back at the second-quarter buzzer to give the Spartans a commanding 37-11 lead at halftime. The second half was much the same, enabling Marian coach Annie Byrne to substitute liberally …

Providence Catholic 47, Richards 37. The Celtics' inside-out game was too much for the Bulldogs.
The Hot Read: Providence Catholic used its defense to bat a lot of balls early on and amass blocks and steals. That allowed the Celtics to run Richards and open up a 23-16 lead at the break. Providence senior Danielle Barry set the tone inside with five blocks and two steals. The Celtics used the pick and roll early and the inside game opened up shots for Providence that eventually started falling in the second half. Richards star Brianna LeBeau got looks, but like many of her teammates struggled from the field, shooting just 3-for-12. Patch’s MVP: Barry for her all-around performance. She led all scorers with with 16 points and added seven rebounds and five blocks. Honorable mention to the Celtics' Emily Persak, who buried Richards with …

Providence Catholic: 51, Joliet West 36. The Celtics storm out to a 19-2 lead and hold off a rally by the Tigers.
The Hot Read: The outcome of the non-conference game Monday in New Lenox was pretty much determined in the first quarter. Providence outscored Joliet West 19-2 and led the remainder of the contest to end a five-game losing streak. The Tigers missed their first 10 shots, while the Celtics connected on 7-of-14 shots, including 3-of-4 three-pointers in the opening eight minutes. Joliet West scored the final four points of the second quarter and first eight points of the third quarter to get within 30-25, but Providence closed strong and took a comfortable 38-28 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Celtics scored the game’s final eight points, including four free throws from Alex Shermulis to pull away. Patch’s MVP: Providence senior center …

Senior center Danielle Barry's career-high 29 points power Celtics past Route 30 rival Knights.
It was a "Barry" special night for Providence. Providence Catholic senior center Danielle Barry scored a career-high 29 points in the Celtics' 61-44 victory over Lincoln-Way Central Monday. And she was as suprised as anyone. "I wasn't necessarily going for 29 points," Barry said. "It's just kind of happened." The Celtics (7-3) demonstrated their dominance early, building a 7-2 after a three-point shot from senior guard Megan Hettinger. The Knights (2-4) retaliated with a three-pointer from senior guard/forward Kim Rietveld to make it 7-5. But Providence pulled out to a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Knights threatened again in the second narrowing Providence's lead to 15-13. But then Barry landed back-to-back-to-back shots …

Celtics' girls basketball team hopeful of posting another winning season.
Optimism reigns supreme in the preseason, and the most common variety of that optimism is fueling girls basketball practices at Providence Catholic right now. "I'm cautiously optimistic. They're working hard and they're getting a lot of reps," Celtics girls' coach Eileen Copenhaver said. "I only have 10 on the team, but I like my 10." The Celtics went 17-13 last season and return their leading scorer plus a bevy of seniors with plenty of varsity seasoning. Junior Cassidy Glenn led the way offensively with 13.3 points per game last year, and her 6.0 rebounds per game leads all returning players. "She's athletic, she can play inside and outside, and she's good in the open court," Copenhaver said. "She's just a good athlete. She knows the …
