We're No. 1 — Illinois Has Nation's Worst Credit Rating

Despite 2011's 67 percent state income tax hike — which took a week's pay away from you — the state's financial problems have worsened.

Illinois now has the lowest credit rating of all 50 states. Standard & Poor’s rating services downgraded Illinois’ credit rating last week to A-, with a negative outlook.  State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, who blamed the negative rating on inaction on the public pension system by Gov. Pat Quinn and the General Assembly, said Illinois is headed for "fiscal disaster." He said the lower rating will force the state to fork over more money on interest payments. This will affect state universities, road construction and other public institutions because more will go to interest than principal as these projects are paid for. “If you went out to borrow $500 because you have such bad credit, it will cost $95 more in interest than better-rated states…

Cory Singer Gets Support from State Treasurer Dan Rutherford

Ground support gathered at the New Lenox headquarters of Will County Executive Candidate Cory Singer to discuss key election points. Meanwhile, Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford discussed the GOP campaign strategy for Illinois and nationwide.

A small but committed group of supporters for Cory Singer, the Republican candidate for Will County Executive, met over coffee and donuts Tuesday at Singer's headquarters on Maple Street. The current Will County Executive, Democrat Larry Walsh is running for re-election. Illinois State Treasurer Daniel Rutherford arrived to cheer local the GOP candidate on and urged supporters to press on for Republican votes. Singer talked about taxes, property values in relation to major construction projects and the economy of government. In essence, he said, these issues are woven in an overall fabric that blankets families, jobs, homes and transportation. A discussion with a supporter in regard to property taxes grew into a conversation related to the…

jamiev: Your comments reflect a person who has an axe to grind. They sound like sour grapes, devoid of fact and directed exclusively at Mr. Singer. Are you perhaps a current or former Forest Preserve worker who is mad at Mr. Singer for proposing to freeze your salary during the economic downturn? Mad because you were forced to take no pay increase while Will County residents lost their homes, …   more ›

Residents Nudged to Cash In with State Program

The recently rebranded I-Cash program reconnects Illinois residents with unclaimed assets, and currently has $1.5 billion in unclaimed funds—$34 million in Will County alone.

Who doesn't need a little extra cash in their pockets? If you're strapped for cash and looking for a quick and easy way to line your wallet or purse with a few greenbacks, the State of Illinois knows where a cool $1.5 billion sits, untouched. The State of Illinois currently holds more than $1 billion in unclaimed cash—and this year, the goal is to dole out $120 million of it (a 20-percent increase from last year). The State's newly renamed I-Cash program—formerly called Cash Dash—is designed to give residents the ability to reclaim money or assets they may have lost track of. Illinois residents can search a database to see if any of it belongs to them. And according to State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, $34 million belongs in the hands of …
