New Lenox Wins Home Town Award for Unprecedented 2nd Year in a Row

The prestigious award was won for an outpouring of community support of ShareFest 2011.

For the second year in a row, the Village of New Lenox was presented the Governor's Home Town Award at a ceremony Thursday at the Governor's Mansion in Springfield. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) administer the program that found ShareFest 2011 something to shout about. Last year the village won for Preparing Citizens for Emergencies and Disaster, a program created and facilitated through the Safe Communities America Coalition and Citizen Corps Council.   Readers might like: While ShareFest has just now completed its seventh year, ShareFest 2011 was the year it expanded partnership with more than 70 different organizations and gathered hundreds of volunteers. Community Emergency Response Team Achieves Top Challenge Scores

New Lenox Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) scored big in Prairie State challenge.

Congratulations to our New Lenox CERT team for a job well-done. The team participated in the 3rd Annual Prairie State CERT Challenge Team, which was held Sept. 29. The event was held at a Glenview training facility for firefighters, law enforcement, emergency management professional and other first-responders.  in lenview, IL that trains fire fighters, law enforcement officers, emergency management professionals and other first responders. The New Lenox CERT team achieved an excellent rating. Dan Martin, public safety division chief for New Lenox Police Department, said, "I can’t tell you of how proud I am of each of them.  Each team member trained and prepared for the event which undoubtedly led to their success." Health and Safety Fair Features Community Emergency Response Teams

Overall health and safety awareness ties works toward building a thriving community.

As Hurricane Isaac's 12-foot wave surges crashed the shores last week of Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, Community Emergency Response Teams were on-hand to help residents in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama. It is precisely this type of circumstance that demands CERT staff to be at the ready to respond, said Dan Martin, public safety division chief for the Village of New Lenox. The multiple services and assortment of equipment that CERT is prepared to offer residents at a moment's notice are scheduled to be on display throughout the day on Sept. 8 at the Spencer Pointe School campus. Dan Martin Envisions a Safer, Healthier New Lenox

The public safety division chief leads hundreds of volunteers in an effort to make New Lenox a safe place prepared for emergencies. As the village grows, the volunteerism he's fostered can help achieve that goal.

When laying out his goals for New Lenox, public safety division chief Dan Martin makes a tough task sound simple: “We’re trying to make New Lenox the healthiest, safest and most prepared community in Illinois.” As New Lenox began to expand, village officials saw the need for someone to focus on public safety and emergency preparedness. That’s when Martin, 47, moved from his job as police chief at the New Lenox Police Department and took over his new role. But how can he gauge New Lenox’s progress? In recognition?
