D210 Board Member Defends High-profile DUI Case: Does it Compromise the School District?

Should the responsibilities of a school board member be a consideration when it comes to the professional workplace?

Stephen White, a member of the Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Board of Education, made headlines with his defense of Carlton Fisk, the 64-year old retired White Sox player on a DUI charge in New Lenox. While Fisk's case came to a close Dec. 27—with one-year supervision—some readers debated White's position on the board. Fisk, who paid $1,250 in court costs, was also ordered to complete an alcohol abuse program. Part of that program demands that he meet with select families that had lost loved ones due to drunken drivers.  "I know he is a former judge but really I don't know if it is a good idea to have someone who is involved in education of our children represent a DUI case," one commentor said. "Our schools have a program that …

Pat: Let me be clear: The problem with board members like Steve White is not that they back the superintendent--the board and the superintendent should be on the same page most of the time. It's the complete lack of oversight or critical analysis by Steve White that gets me. He never participates in the meetings. I never hear him say, "I really like this and want more of it," or "I don't like …   more ›

Blame it on Brodsky: Court Supervision

Joel Brodsky bearing the brunt of the blown Drew Peterson murder defense in a Thursday filing was one of many interesting things going on at the Joliet courthouse this past week.

When a jury finds you guilty of killing your wife, it's safe to say you might have some image problems. But in the aftermath of the Drew Peterson murder trial, defense attorney Joel Brodsky may be looking worse than anyone. First there was his very public feud with co-counsel Steve Greenberg. Then Brodsky voluntarily withdrew (or was he discharged?) from the Peterson defense team. And once he was gone, the five lawyers still representing Peterson blamed Brodsky for blowing the case and pointed out that entering into a publicity contract with a suspected wife-killer could be viewed as unsound legal strategy. And then on Thursday, Greenberg got his latest last word in with a devastating, 32-page court filing that paints Brodsky as a a …

Court Supervision: Chris Vaughn Launched For Life

Quadruple-killer Christopher Vaughn getting sent to prison for the rest of his life was just one of the things going on at the Will County Courthouse this week.

Last week was a short one, with Thanksgiving Day and Thanksgiving Day II giving us a bit of a break from the courthouse. But we got right back to it Monday with the attorney for quadruple-killer Christopher Vaughn blaming the guilty verdict on Drew Peterson and Drew Peterson's lawyers, among other things. The judge didn't buy this line of reasoning and declined to call a do-over and hold a whole new trial. Then he slammed Vaughn with four life sentences. That was rough. But at least Vaughn got an early start at serving all that time, as the county packed him off to Stateville Correctional Center the very next day. But that's not all. Let's look at what else was going on down at the courthouse during the week that just ended:

Teen Charged in Murders Could Go Home, Attorney Says: Court Watch

Also, five teens are facing an indictment in connection to the shooting death of a 17-year-old in a Chicago Heights park, and White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk's court date was postponed.

After sitting in jail for more than a year, one teen charged in the robbery and beating death of a Palos township couple could get the chance to go home if a judge rescinds a no-bond order. A bond hearing has been set for Mohammad Salahat, 18, on Monday in a Bridgeview courtroom with his defense attorney set to argue that a psychological evaluation will show Salahat is non-violent and won't be a danger to anyone if he is released. Salahat is charged with murder in connection with stabbing and beating death of John and Maria Granat, along with three alleged accomplices: Christopher Wyma, 18; Ehab Qasem, 20; and the couple's son, John Granat, 18. The four men have been in custody without bond since the incident. Patch rounds up the Southland…

Carlton Fisk Catches New Court Date

The Cooperstown catcher's drunken driving case was postponed again.

It's been a month and a week since baseball immortal Carlton Fisk was allegedly found passed out behind the wheel of his pickup in a New Lenox cornfield, but the former Red and White Sox star has yet to make it into a Joliet courtroom. Fisk was scheduled for a hearing Thursday morning but his drunken driving case postponed until Dec. 17. Fisk's lawyer, Stephen White, is fighting to get his superstar client's driver's license back and to have evidence ejected from the case. Fisk, 64, lost his license when he allegedly refused to take a breathalyzer test during his arrest Oct. 22 on charges of driving under the influence, improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol. White has also filed a motion claiming the New Lenox police …

Hate Crime Guilty Plea Draws Probation: Court Watch

Also, the lawyer for White Sox immortal Carlton Fisk is fighting to get the Hall of Famer's driver's license back and to have evidence ejected from his drunken driving case, and more court news in the south suburbs.

A hate crime and robbery case against two southwestern suburban men that began more than two years ago ended as the pair pleaded guilty to one felony count each of a hate crime. Akram Alshoweat, 24, of Oak Lawn and Mohammed Shaban, 37, of Hickory Hills have to pay court costs and were each sentenced to 24 months probation  by Cook County Judge Colleen Ann Hyland in her Bridgeview courtroom. Other related charges were dismissed. The two men were charged in connection to a June 2010 incident where police say they attacked a woman they believed to be a lesbian outside a Hickory Hills restaurant. Carlton Fisk Lawyer Wants Judge to Strike Out DUI Evidence

The lawyer for White Sox legend Carlton Fisk filed motions to have evidence thrown out in the Hall of Famer's drunken driving case.

The lawyer for White Sox immortal Carlton Fisk is fighting to get the Hall of Famer's driver's license back and to have evidence ejected from his drunken driving case. Fisk, 64, lost his license when he allegedly refused to take a breathalyzer test during his arrest Oct. 22 on charges of driving under the influence, improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol. But the Sox star had actually volunteered to take the blood-alcohol test, according to a petition filed Thursday by his attorney, Stephen White. White also filed a motion claiming the New Lenox police illegally arrested Fisk since there was "no reasonable suspicion of criminal activity" to give them cause to pull him over in the first place. Only Fisk wasn't pulled over…
