New stores are headed for New Lenox Town Center near Walmart.
The Village Board Monday approved the first reading on a handful of special use permits to accommodate at least four or five new stores in the New Lenox Town Center anchored by Walmart. The development in the 500 block of E. Route 30 continues to attract new businesses to town, said Mayor Tim Baldermann. Pending the signing of final contracts, village officials would not reveal the names of the incoming businesses. However, trustees authorized a special use permit to enable future tenants room for truck docks for three small businesses. Expansion of the retail area is expected in the out-lot near Culver's as well as the in-line stores alongside the Walmart anchor. Baldermann said, "Its great news that despite the recession, we continue to …

What about development on the south side of town?
The village's study on the vision of the Route 30 Corridor got many residents suggesting a more pedestrian-friendly commercial area. Obviously Route 30 is a main drag, which could be problematic for the development of a substantial pedestrian-friendly commercial district. Patch posed the question on Facebook about development on the south side of town. The Village Station project along Laraway and Cedar Roads was first proposed in 2005. It was planned as a 236-acre combination commercial and residential project. The last update on that project was in June 2012, when the Regional Transit Authority agreed that it would come to the aid of New Lenox in its plans to revitalize the Village Station project, providing developer recruitment and …

The grand re-opening of LA Café Restaurant won't happen in time for Christmas.
Fire may have destroyed LA Cafe, one of New Lenox's most beloved restaurants in January, but the business is eventually slated for a resurrection. The Jan. 28 blaze started accidentally in the kitchen in the early morning hours on a Saturday. No one was hurt, but the business was forced to close. Marc Angel, owner of the popular Mexican restaurant, LA Café, had hoped to re-open next month, but plans have been pushed back to spring 2013. Still, he's excited about the restoration work that got underway last week by Phoenix Restoration Co., 195 Industry Ave., Frankfort. Steve Wolf, who is one of three partners at the restoration company, said he's moving full-steam ahead with the project that now encompasses the entire five-store strip along…

La Grange resident Pete Robinson was at the Portillo's opening Tuesday in New Lenox, and he's been going to the restaurant's openings since the mid-1980s.
Crowds of well-wishers and hungry customers gathered for the grand opening of Portillo's Restaurant in New Lenox on Tuesday, including one man who's been going to openings for years. After the official ribbon cutting ceremony and welcome speeches, long-time fans of the restaurant made their way into the 7,800-square-foot facility and headed straight to the food order line. Pete Robinson, a retired railroad employee from La Grange, traveled to New Lenox to attend the grand opening ceremony. He's been going to Portillo's openings regularly since the mid-1980s, including two in California and numerous spots in Illinois. Already he plans for the Feb. 15 grand opening of a Portillo's in Arizona, he said. Check back tomorrow for more photos from…

The popular restaurant will open its doors soon in the retail center with Target and Lowe's. Find out when you get your favorites!
The announcement that Portillo's chose New Lenox over other area towns excited residents and got their mouths watering in anticipation of the restaurant's opening. That time is near: A ribbon-cutting will mark Portillo's opening at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, and the doors will open to customers immediately following. Mayor Tim Baldermann announced the date at last week's Village Board meeting. Portillo's will open in the New Lenox Retail Center, which is anchored by Target and Lowe's. "We're excited to have them," Baldermann said, adding that his favorite is the beef and cheddar sandwich. And Portillo's is excited to be here. So much so that president Dick Portillo decided to forego the sales tax incentive it would have received from …

Also at the meeting, Fuller's Car Wash was granted a special use permit to build near Lincoln-Way Central.
A zoning variance request by the newly-opened Provena Healing Arts Pavilion to install an electronic message center sign stirred a debate among village trustees at the regular Monday meeting about the viability of the current sign ordinance. Director of Community Development Robin Ellis explained that due to the medical facility's location in a commercially-zone area, an electronic message center sign has the potential to negatively impact the character of the U.S. Route 30 commercial district. Amy Stevens, chief operating officer for Provena, appealed the denial. Standing before the board, she said. "The New Lenox Healing Arts Pavilion is the new home to a wide variety of Provena Saint Joseph medical Center services aimed at improving …

The Village Board also awarded a half-million dollar bid for street resurfacing project.
New Lenox Boy Scout Troop 44 was honored Monday with the Good Citizenship Award at the outset of the Village Board meeting. While on a five-mile hike as part of a project on July 14 at Red Gate Woods in Palos Park, the members of Boy Scout Troop 44, who range in age from 11 to 13 years old, encountered a man injured after falling off his mountain bike. Scout Master Scott Dexheimer explained that all 13 troop members had arrived for an early morning hike when they encountered 47-year-old Andy Matthews, a regular mountain bike enthusiast from Evanston. The boys noticed that he was wobbly on his bike and needed help. The man stopped and said that he had hit a rock and was thrown. His eye was swollen and he was bleeding. Dexheimer said the …

After a fire destroyed the popular Mexican restaurant in January, the owner promised, "we will rebuild." Plans for a new building have been drawn up by Olivieri Architects.

Owner Mark Angel said he hopes the new building will be ready by December. Already Olivieri Architects in Frankfort have prepared an artistic rendering of the planned restaurant. The A-Orland Driving School, located near Laraway and Nelson roads, is interested in the Hickory Creek Plaza across from Lincoln-Way Central but would first need a special use approval from the village.
The A-Orland Driving School, which already has one location in New Lenox, is eyeing a second spot closer to Lincoln-Way Central High School to perhaps pull in business from those young drivers. During Monday's Village Board meeting, trustees were presented with an ordinance to grant a special use permit to the driving school, which would allow it in the Hickory Creek Shopping Plaza. The A-Orland Driving School is interested in moving into the shopping center, giving it a location closer to Central students. The current location is off Laraway and Nelson roads, closer to Lincoln-Way West, and it also operates through Providence Catholic. It would occupy the western-most space in the strip mall, which once housed Curves. Mayor Tim …
