D210 Board: Are iPads an Answer to Academic Engagement?

On the heels of a curriculum instruction update at Thursday's Lincoln-Way Community High School Board of Education meeting, a team of instructional technologists passed out iPads. The board was asked a simple question: Who's you favorite mascot? No, there was no time to review notes or discuss the matter from their seats in the board room at Lincoln-Way Central High School. The question demanded a rapid response, and they each obediently input their responses—Knight, Griffin, Phoenix or Warrior. Serving in the temporary role of teacher, the technology specialist stood before board members and spotted their individual responses in a matter of seconds. Student Council Presidents Update D210 Board

The District 210 board also heard about the summer school session at the Thursday, Aug. 25, meeting.

How do you make four high school juniors nervous, anxious and a little bit excited all at the same time? Put them in a room with their principals, the district superintendent and other various staff members. The four juniors weren't in trouble, they're the newest student council presidents at their respective schools and were invited by the District 210 Board of Education to speak at its Thursday, Aug. 25, meeting at Lincoln Way East. The four students, Marissa Lee, of Lincoln Way Central, Sarah Price, of East, Jason DeGrado, of North, and Jennifer McGowan, of West, each took time to highlight the comings and goings of the past week for their entire student bodies. D122 Board: What Was Accomplished Last Year?

Early in the 2010-11 school year, the District 122 board of education listed some goals. We recap what can be checked off, such as a new contract with teachers, and what's still in the works, including building projects.

Despite some public disagreements that District 122 board members said were handled poorly, they did come together to accomplish most of the goals they had last year. In November, the New Lenox School District board of education listed numerous goals to accomplish in the 2010-11 academic year. Heading into a new year, there are still a few long-range goals but many that can be checked off. Every summer, school test data comes back, and at the start of a team of people at each school look at what can be improved in that building. A district-wide team find commonalities and puts together a comprehensive list of goals. "It's a grassroots process," Supt. Mike Sass said. "Where are the kids hurting, and how can we help?" D122 Holds Semiannual Planning Meeting Tonight

The Board of Education will meet to discuss the district's five-year financial forecast, the superintendent's evaluation and more.

The New Lenox School District 122 will meet tonight to discuss future financial planning and the evaluation of Supt. Mike Sass. The meeting is one of two strategic planning sessions the school board holds every year. The other, held in January, largely addresses upcoming budget solutions. At this meeting, according to the agenda, the board will get an update on the district's five-year financial forecast, as well as discuss strategy development for a bond/interest fund and facility needs plus related funding options. The board meets today from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Haven Administrative Center, 102 S. Cedar Road.
