Lincoln-Way Transportation Ready to Welcome Precious Cargo

The Route 30 construction project requires motorists to be even more aware of safety precautions around school buses this year.

At 160-strong, they spent the summer parked in the quiet lots of the Lincoln-Way School District 210 Transportation Department, located on a road that bears the name of their sole purpose on this earth. Those long yellow buses—the appearance of which has changed little in the past 20 or so years—have been inspected, repaired, retooled and cleaned-up all on Schoolhouse Road in unincorporated New Lenox. And now it's the end of August, and they have already taken to the streets that encompass the 105 square miles of the district. Elementary districts start this week: Aug. 21 for D122 and D157C, Aug. 22 for Summit Hill D161   The wheels of the bus will definitely go round-and-round, but LW Transportation Director Rich Wilkey along with his …

Free Back-to-School Haircuts at JCPenney

Kids in kindergarten through 6th grade can get a free haircut at JCPenney during the month of August.

Brown, blonde, black and red locks of hair were falling fast and furious to the floor at the JCPenney hair salon, located in the far southeast corner of the Mokena store, where half-dozen stylists were busy clipping, cutting and shaving children's hair as part of a free back-to-school haircut project for kids during the month of August. In the first day of the project, the Mokena store was at the ready for a day dedicated to kid cuts. The store had 140 booked appointments so far over, and they were expecting more as the word spread. But that doesn't mean that they won't take walk-ins, said Kim Gignac, JCP salon leader. In consideration of budget-conscious families especially at the start of the school year, Gignac said, the store is …

POLL: Back-to-School Spending

Sales are expected to jump this year for back-to-school spending, according to the National Retail Federation.

$688.62. That is the amount the average person with children in grades kindergarten to 12th grade is expected to spend this year on back-to-school shopping, according to the National Retail Federation's annual back-to-school spending survey.  Last year, the survey predicted families would spend $603.63.  "With more children entering elementary and middle school this fall and after cutting back their spending last year, parents with growing children will hit the stores this summer to replace and replenish what their children might have had to “make-do” with last school season," according to a NRF press release.  Parents surveyed said they would spend the most on clothing, accessories, and electronics this summer as the first day of school …

For what is charged in registration fees the school should be providing the supplies. I have asked friends and family who live in different parts of the country what kind of registration fees they are charged. Most of them asked what I was talking about because they are charged nothing for their child's free education. It's an Illinois thing, these fees.   more ›

When Does School Start in New Lenox?

Only a few weeks left of the summer. School starts between Aug. 16-21 for most children in New Lenox and surrounding suburbs.

In the three-to-four weeks before school starts, many of the kids and parents of school-age children begin to get excited. Elementary students may or may not yet know who their teachers will be, but for those that do they've no doubt heard the news from friends or perhaps older siblings. This teacher or that teacher is "awesome, easy or tough." They know which building they'll be spending the bulk of their day. They have in-hand the school supply list. If it has been misplaced, the stores in town, including the Walmart on Route 30, have supply lists from every school in New Lenox and surrounding communities. But when exactly does school begin? While it seems to start earlier every year, it's not really the case. For more than 10 years …

Bus Schedule Changes: What Was Your First-Week Impact?

There were a few bumps in the road with the new bus schedules for District 122, but nothing out of the ordinary, Supt. Mike Sass said.

Many parents in the school district were upset when the District 122 school board approved new bus schedules last year that had students in grades 4-6 picked up at 7 a.m. and getting out before junior high kids. But despite a few bumps in the road during the first week back to school, Supt. Mike Sass said nothing was out of the ordinary. "It was the typical first day of school challenges," Sass said. District and transportation officials were at the schools last week to record drop-off times and figure out what needed to be fixed. "If someone was late, was the driver’s route too long, or did a parent stop to take extra photos?" In February, the school board changed bus times that allowed the district to cut 16 drivers and 19 buses, saving …
