The Village Board Considers Amending the Video Gaming Ordinance

The New Lenox Village Board intends to re-visit the conversation about video gambling at tonight's 7 p.m. meeting at Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway.

In June 2012, trustees voted 3-2 to opt out of a program with the Illinois General Assembly in which some of the profits from legalized video gaming machines go to fund construction projects. Representatives from the VFW and the American Legion had complained that the ordinance to restrict video gaming would hurt their business. Readers might like: The 2009 state program allows businesses a 30 to 35 percent cut of the total profit and the village would get 5 percent. Trustee Annette Bowden said in June 2012 that she was uncomfortable in shaping a partnership with the state in this type of program. "My biggest concern is the instability of the state," Bowden said, saying she thought the added revenue could be "empty promises." At the same …

VWF 'After New Year's Party' Fundraiser: Filling in the Shortfall after Ban on Video Gaming

The T-Bird Huck Band is the entertainment for the night.

The VFW is hosting a post-New Year's fundraiser, dubbed "Blues, Beer & BBQ," to make up for funds they can no longer generate from video gambling. In June, village trustees voted 3-2 to opt out of a state program that would allow video gambling machines in town and banned the games instead.     Despite an outcry by the American Legion and the VFW, the village declined to enter into a relationship with the state, which would have oversight of the program. You can read more about it here, but village trustees opposed a program that joined their revenue stream with the Illinois General Assembly. Here are the basics of the state program:   Frank Novak, VFW quartermaster/chief financial officer, said before the ban on video games, the …

Veterans Day Ceremony at the Village Commons

In honor of the veterans and active-duty military personnel who serve to secure our freedom in America, this Veterans Day Ceremony honors their sacrifices.

As is typical for those who live in the community dubbed "The Home of Proud of Americans," New Lenox residents came out for the annual Veterans Day Memorial Celebration. At the 11th hour, on Nov. 11, about 60 New Lenox residents—young and old—gathered at the Village Commons on Veterans Parkway to honor the veterans and active-duty military personnel who serve to secure our freedom. In the same manner as elected officials and representatives from VFWs and American Legions across the nation, New Lenox had its share of brief tributes. Mayor Tim Baldermann, Rep. Renee Kosel and veteran representatives reminded those gathered that the freedom Americans enjoy is largely due to the sacrifices of veterans and the active-duty military. As the red, …

To Veterans' Dismay, Village Board Denies Video Gambling

New Lenox trustees voted to opt out of allowing video gaming machines in local establishments Monday with a 3-2 vote. One board member was absent and one abstained from voting.

Representatives from New Lenox's two veterans organizations packed the Village Hall chamber Monday night and left disappointed as the Village Board voted to opt out of allowing video gambling machines in local establishments, a move veterans representatives said would hurt their business. "Is it fair to tell them they can't gamble in their own club, but they can drive 6 or 7 miles to gamble in someone else's club?" said Jim Potter, a member of the American Legion Post 1977 and owner of the White Horse Inn, which currently offers video gambling. "Isn't this another restriction of their freedom? And haven't they given enough?" The board voted 3-2 to opt out. Mayor Tim Baldermann and trustees Annette Bowden and Nancy Dye voted to opt out …

It's not just about gambling... it's about financial support for our community and support of the long-standing businesses who are the only four that were looking for the support of our Board. and... it's about the fact that by voting "no" they are basically closing the only two places in our community that exist because of our veterans - for our veterans and for our community. as you say, …   more ›

Fallen Soldiers Phillip Brodnick, Jacob Lowell Honored at New Lenox American Legion

The American Legion Post 1977 dedicated its banquet hall to Brodnick and Lowell, who both died in wars in the Middle East in 2007, during a tearful Memorial Day ceremony.

It's been about five years since Bernadine Lowell and Marian Stockhausen have seen their sons.  Five years, and not one day goes by without thinking about Jacob Lowell or Phillip Brodnick, New Lenox residents who died in 2007 while serving their country in wars in the Middle East.  Bernadine Lowell thinks about Jacob's smile. She thinks about her other two children, who are both married, and how Jacob won't ever get to have that kind of life. Marian Stockhausen said she honors Phillip's memory "every day, in our hearts, any way we can."  "Part of me thought people would start to forget," Bernadine Lowell said. "Five years, to a lot of people, is a long time. To us it seems like it happened yesterday." No one's forgetting their sacrifice. …
