No. 17 Thornwood closed the gap to 26-19 at the half but couldn’t take advantage of a height advantage as center Dorothy Taylor was in foul trouble much of the night. The 16th-seeded Knights were able to pull away some in the second half as Post stayed hot and Amanda Gagliano added nine points and five rebounds over the final two quarters. Eagles erupt for 21 first-quarter points and hit nine three-pointers in 50-32 victory over Knights.
Lincoln-Way Central's girls basketball team dug itself an early hole against Sandburg and never was able to climb out of it. Sandburg scored 21 points in the first quarter and led by double digits most of the way in 50-32 victory in Orland Park on Thursday night. The Eagles (9-11, 4-4) found their shooting stroke midway through the first quarter and went on a 13-2 run in the final 2:41 to build a 21-7 lead. Guards Ashley Yongwirth and Katie Winchel scored 11 of the 13 points. Five of Sandburg's nine three-pointers came in the first quarter. “We’ve shot the ball poorly the last two games,” Eagles coach Chris Hellrung said. “So, it was good to come back to our home court and shoot as well as we did.” Both teams went cold in the second …

Knights begin girls basketball season with a convincing win over the Cougars in New Lenox.
One of the keys for Lincoln-Way Central's girls basketball team this season is how well the players execute on defense. The Knights got a chance to show off their defensive prowess in Tuesday night's season opener against Plainfield South. Although head coach Loren Hess would have liked to have seen his Knights execute a bit better on offense, he had no complaints about their defense. Central capitalized on many of the chances that came its way as the Knights captured a 46-16 nonconference victory over the Cougars in New Lenox. "We're hanging our hats on defense, and I was very pleased with our defensive effort tonight," Hess said. "But we need to have more of a killer instinct offensively, since we left a lot of points on the floor. "…

Lincoln-Way Central coach Loren Hess challenges girls to believe in themselves.
Lincoln-Way Central's girls basketball team has several qualities that may help it turn in a better showing than it experienced a year ago. Some key senior leaders, a few players who are very athletic and a fairly deep group of guards who are quick and can play pretty good defense. Knights coach Loren Hess is looking for more fire from his players and feels that could be critical to improving upon last year's 5-20 record. "We can have a good, solid year this season," Hess said. "My challenge is getting the girls to expect that we can win more than five or six games. To be honest, I'm looking for more intensity from them. "They all need to have that want-to attitude which will allow them to get after it. I want them to be able to take it to…
