Cross Country: L-W North's Waldier Pushes the Pace in Regional Title Run

Lincoln-Way North's Dena Waldier captures the individual title, while Lincoln-Way Central takes the team crown in Class 3A girls cross country regional competition. Andrew's Mike Keller charges to forefront in the boys race.

Two seconds. After running 3 miles, that was the margin of victory for Lincoln-Way North’s Dena Waldier in the Class 3A Andrew girls cross country regional Saturday at Turtle Head Lake Forest Preserve. One one-thousand, two one-thousand. Count it out. Two hard-fought seconds. Waldier was clocked in 19:16 to capture the individual championship in a tight race that featured five runners bunched within 10 seconds of each other at the head of the pack. Lincoln-Way Central’s Alena Pacheco placed second in 19:18 and led the Knights to the team title. Lincoln-Way Central finished with 44 points. Lincoln-Way East placed second with 50, followed by Andrew 60, Lincoln-Way North 89 and Homewood-Flossmoor 105. All five advance to the Class 3A Quincy …

Bartuch Boosts L-W Central Boys Soccer

Lincoln-Way Central edges Eisenhower 2-1 to win the Lincoln-Way Invite, raise its boys soccer record to 8-1-1; Providence girls volleyball takes title at Oak Lawn Classic.

Conor Bartuch scored the go-ahead goal with a little over 3 minutes remaining to lift Lincoln-Way Central to a 2-1 victory over Eisenhower in the Lincoln-Way Invite. The victory gave the Knights this year's boys soccer tournament title and pushed their record to 8-1-1. The Providence girls volleyball team didn't look too far ahead to Wednesday's matchup against perennial power Mother McAuley as the Celtics were in strong form last weekend at the Oak Lawn Volleyball Classic. The Celtics picked up five victories over the weekend to win the tournament and improve to 13-2 on the season. Krista Brakauskas was named tournament MVP. The Lincoln-Way West girls volleyball team battled with Providence during the Oak Lawn Volleyball Classic, before …

Great in State: Several Area Girls at EIU This Weekend

Class 2A Lincoln-Way West qualified in six events to lead the area, while Providence and Lincoln-Way Central will look to mount a run in Class 3A.

Providence’s 4x400 relay team is at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston this weekend for the IHSA Class 3A girls state track and field championships. Also representing the Celtics are Lindsay Smoljan (pole vault) and Mandy Coglianese (300 hurdles). Lincoln-Way Central has a pair of standouts competing this weekend as Bri Tomnitz advanced in the high jump and Alena Pacheco will run the 3,200. On the Class 2A side, it should be a great finish for Lincoln-Way West seniors Sara Losacco and Monica Hahn as the duo both will compete in a pair of events. Losacco is among the state’s elite in the pole vault and 400 dash, while Hahn will give it her best shot in the 1,600 and 3,200. Also representing the Warriors this weekend will be Abby Hedlin (high …

Lone Senior: Alex Carr Drives Lincoln-Way West

Carr is a versatile player who is enjoying a breakthrough season. Next, she plans to head attend Maryville University in St. Louis.

For the first time in school history, the Lincoln-Way softball team is finally old enough to have seniors. Make that a senior, as Alex Carr is the lone senior playing for the Warriors this spring, but she’s packed a wallop all on her own, leading the team in hitting at .473, as well as in several other team categories, including RBIs, total bases, hits and doubles. “She’s always been a good player, but this year she’s had a breakthrough season,” Lincoln-Way West coach Heather Novak said. “And she’s played multiple positions for us. She’s caught, moved to third base and then shortstop and thrived.” Carr, who has committed to Maryville University in St. Louis, where she’ll continue to play softball and major in physical therapy, also has …

Ex-Celtic Goulding Punishes Providence

JCA edges Providence 8-6 to gain a split in softball series between Catholic-school rivals.

Joliet Catholic Academy senior Mallory Goulding was a Celtic last year. Now, she’s an "Angel." Goulding’s stuff on the mound during Wednesday’s game wasn't quite angelic, but it got the job done. Providence had smashed JCA 11-1 on Monday, but fell in Wednesday’s contest, 8-6. Preps in Motion: L-Way Central Boys and Girls Finding Their Stride

Knights use recent Co-Ed Challenge indoor track and field meet to experiment with new events and work on conditioning.

Family and friends turned out for the recent Lincoln Way Central Co-Ed Challenge boys and girls indoor track and field meet. No team scores were kept in the meet, which was largely an exercise in conditioning and provided a forum for some of the competitors to experiment with new events. And, yet, some of the top individuals managed to find a way to say ahead of the curve. To wit: Lincoln-Way Central's Courtney Paarlberg won the long jump (16-7 3/4). Alena Pacheco won the 3200-meter run (11:43). Bre Powers swept to a first-place finish in the 55-meter dash (7.4). And Taylor Esch won the 400-meter dash (1:05.5). On the boys side, Lincoln-Way Central was led by Brent Swanberg. He won the high jump (6-1) and placed second in the triple jump (…

Lincoln-Way Central Cross Country Teams Prepare for Sectional

The Knights are excited about future of the program.

Lincoln-Way Central has enjoyed a long tradition of success in cross country, which made 2009 something of an exception for the Knights. The boys team didn't qualify for sectionals and the girls squad was unable to advance any individuals to the state finals in Peoria. Both teams qualified for state trips in the previous two seasons under their current coaches. The boys teams won't have to worry about a repeat of last year, as they've already advanced out of the regional. That happened last Saturday when coach John Taylor's team moved on after finishing in fifth place in the Class 3A Minooka Regional. Earlier that day, coach Matt Bowden's girls squad placed fourth to also assure themselves of a trip to Saturday's Normal West Sectional. …
