County's 911 Call Center Plans Could be Scrapped

According to the Joliet Herald-News, local officials are happy the long-discussed plans for a $36 million building are over.

Following at least five years debating the construction of a $36 million 911 call center in Will County, the plans could be scrapped. According to the Joliet Herald-News, the Emergency Telephone System Board informally agreed to drop the plans at a meeting earlier this month. But when the board meets at 9 a.m. today in the Will County Office Building, Mokena Village Trustee Don Labriola hopes they'll take an official vote to end plans. Will County 911, which is funded through 75-cent monthly phone surcharges paid by county residents, has already sunk about $1 million into studies and designs on the proposed site for the call center, about 20 acres of land from the Illinois Department of Corrections on Caton Farm Road in Joliet. 911 Call Center Plans Delayed Again

The Emergency Telephone System Board tabled a proposal to purchase 20 acres of land until February.

A plan to buy land and build a $43 million Will County emergency call center was tabled Thursday morning and won't be voted on until at least February. The Will County 911 Emergency Telephone System Board voted to table the plan, which has been discussed for at least five years, because an outside review of the proposal was not prepared in time for the meeting. The study is expected to be completed next month, but the ETS Board doesn't meet again until February. The plans call for acquiring 20 acres of land from the Illinois Department of Corrections on Caton Farm Road in Joliet, at a cost of about $700,000.
