Hickory Creek Barrens Nature Preserve is a recreational and scenic area located on Schoolhouse Road in New Lenox. The Barrens serves as the western boundary of the 1,542-acre Hickory Creek Preserve. It offers numerous areas for residents to use and visit, including the historic one-room Schmuhl School Museum, which is owned and operated by the New Lenox Historical Society. The preserve also offers ample parking, as well as a shelter, a latrine, water fountain and a 2.8 mile biking and hiking path. The location also offers a 66-person capacity picnic shelter that can be rented for large group picnics.
