JJC Fair Links Community Members with Volunteer Openings

Environmental, personal, youth, senior citizen and community groups that need help will be at the Oct. 2 event in the hope of finding new volunteers.

Joliet Junior College submitted this news release:

Joliet Junior College students and community members are invited to the college’s 11th annual Volunteer Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

The Fair, which will include a mix of environmental, personal, youth, senior citizen, and community volunteer organizations, will take place in the C-Concourse from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those attending specifically for the fair should park in JJC’s South Lot 5 and 6.

Attendees don't have to bring anything to the fair, but they should keep in mind that some organizations have an application or interviewing process, and others do background checks.

Amy Sims, coordinator of student activities and holistic wellness, said she hopes students will take advantage of the Volunteer Fair because being a part of a community organization looks good on a resume and provides an opportunity for networking.

“I think it gives students exposure to different types of work environments,” Sims added. “Especially if you’re volunteering in an area or industries where you were hoping to one day get a career. I think it builds their skills as well.”

Sims knows from experience that volunteering can brighten a person’s day.

“It’s touching to see how you’re impacting individuals’ lives, Sims said about her involvement volunteering with the Student United Way last year.”

JJC’s Volunteer Fair falls on the same day as National Student Day, a time for celebrating volunteerism and social responsibility across the country among college students.

Sims said the JJC Bookstore is planning to host a number of activities in honor of National Student Day, including giveaways, door prizes, games such as “Minute to Win It,” and pictures with Wiley the Wolf, JJC’s mascot.
