Where Are Our Priorities?

6There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy upon humankind: 2those to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honour, so that they lack nothing of all that they desire, yet God does not enable them to enjoy these things, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous ill. 3A man may beget a hundred children, and live for many years; but however many are the days of his years, if he does not enjoy life’s good things, or has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he. ~ Ecclesiastes 6:1-3 

I found out last evening that the son of a couple I graduated with from high school had made a very important decision in his life – one that is very honorable in many people’s eyes.  This son of theirs was a professional football player that had just won the Super Bowl earlier this year.  He had the choice of signing a one-year un-guaranteed contract or retire.  He had only played professional ball for 9 years, so in reality, he could have continued playing, but he consulted his wife and made the decision to retire.  He felt he was missing out on too much of his four young children’s lives and would rather spend time being a father to them than making the hundreds of thousands of dollars he could have made by signing the contract.  

So often in society today, people choose money over what is really important in life – the love of God and family.  God will always bless those that make the right decisions according to His will.  He never says life will be easy when we choose to follow His ways, but He will bless us for doing His will above our own.  There are those that do struggle financially to make ends meet, but all God really is looking for any one of us to do is to make our priorities in life according to what He says they should be.  If we put God first, family second and others ahead of ourselves, we will be rewarded with blessings from God that we cannot even imagine down the road.

Prayer 

Dear Lord in Heaven,

There are so many temptations around us to build up earthly treasures.  Keep us grounded to what Your will in our lives is and what is most important in life.  May we re-prioritize our lives where it needs to be made more in line with Your will so that we are truly living as You wish us to live – serving You and others in this world.  Amen.
