Lincolnway Special Rec. Junior Hawks Earn First Place at Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament

Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA) is proud to announce that athletes from their Junior Hawks basketball team received Gold Medals and a First Place Trophy.

Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA) is proud to announce that athletes from their Junior Hawks basketball team received Gold Medals and a First Place Trophy at the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament in Bloomington/Normal, IL on March 17, 2012.

The LWSRA athletes on the Junior Hawks team are Eddie Barker, Mark Eisenbrandt, Windsor Elsden, Danny Gengo, Tori Gould, Tyler Joss, Cory Klene, Will Lenihan, Matthew Malinowski, Jimmy Moustis, Thomas O’Hea, Matt Reczel, and Justin Ryba.  The head coach is Melissa Jensen with assistant coaches Tom Krauss, Adam Kracik, and Erin Jelinek.

The team qualified for the state competition by winning a Gold Medal at the Special Olympics Illinois Area 5 Junior Basketball Tournament at Unity Junior High School in Cicero on January 21, 2012.

During the 2012 State Tournament, the Junior Hawks competed against Manheim Blue on Friday morning.  The Junior Hawks scored a season high 60 points against Manheim Blue beating them 60 to 46.  The team then took on the Oak Lawns Eagles B for the championship on Saturday morning.  The Junior Hawks took an early lead and never relinquished the lead, defeating Oak Lawn for the gold medal by a score of 25 to 19.

Coach Melissa, Coach Tom, Coach Adam, and Coach Erin were very proud of the teamwork and sportsmanship displayed by all during the 2011/2012 season.  The Junior Hawks went undefeated this season with a record of 13 and 0!  Congratulations!

LWSRA is an organization with the primary purpose of providing recreational programs for individuals with special needs.  These programs are developed with the intention of eliminating barriers and to facilitate the participants in developing a balance of leisure and socialization skills.  Recreation resources, opportunities, knowledge, and independence are provided in a variety of settings.  LWSRA offers these services through a cooperative agreement with Frankfort, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox, and Peotone Park Districts.
