Yoga is Good for Your Soul

Downward Facing Dog and a New School Year

Monday was the first day of school for New Lenox School District 122.  I sent my oldest daughter off to second grade and attended my son's kindergarten orientation. The day turned out to be more stressful and emotional than I expected but I knew I had a yoga class to escape to at night.

I attended one of my favorite classes taught by one of my favorite teachers, at Yoga 360 in Frankfort. The class is Hot Vinyasa Yoga and the teacher is Angela Tomassetti. I was first introduced to Angela's class at Yoga 360's event, Yoga Under the Stars, in June. I immediately knew I had to take one of her classes in the studio.

From day one with Angela I felt a soulful connection. She is incredibly knowledgeable with the yoga poses and not just how to get into the pose but the philosophy behind them. Monday night's class consisted of storytelling to the tune of yoga poses. While listening to the stories of Visistha and Vishvamitra, Angela led the class through our downward facing dogs, planks and chaturangas. We then moved into some more challengeing poses geared toward opening our hearts while stretching our bodies in some really crazy ways!

While sweat was pouring down my face and back and I was locked in side angle pose, I began to feel the weight of the day lift. Slowly, some clarity for the challenges I knew I would be facing during the week began to surface and I felt my anxiety calm.

By the time we moved into Savasana, I knew I could make it through the tough week ahead of me.  Today, while I sent my baby boy on the bus, I was at peace.  Thanks to Angela and her class, I know I have the stength within to make it through the changes this year will bring.
