2013 Oscar preview - "Beasts of the Southern Wild" review

Is this quirky movie worth a look? See what I have to say about it.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" is possibly the quirkiest Best Picture nominee this year. the plot centers on Hushpuppy, a six-year-old girl, who lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother. This movie rides on the performance of Quvenzhané Wallis as Hushpuppy. Wallis is raw and real, and she deserves her Actress nomination. The film itself is hard to watch, mostly because of the vast culture differences and because Hushpuppy's father always seems to be there, threatening her. The movie overall is effective, and I would recommend it to people who can adapt to other cultures and dialects that take time to get used to hearing. Overall I give this one an 88/100. It has some potentially scary stuff for the kids. Out of the Best Pic nominees I have seen, I rate Beasts of the Southern Wild second to last. Now available on DVD from most Redbox locations.
