'Mags' is Magnificent for Top-Ranked Providence

Brandon Magallones tosses two-hitter as Celtics push record to 12-0 and remain firmly entrenched at the top of our baseball power rankings.

1. Providence (12-0): Brad Magallones fired a two-hitter and struck out 12 as the Celtics answered “Stevie’s Challenge” with a 9-1 victory over Marian Catholic. Kevin DeFilippis went 4-for-4, scored three runs and stole two bases. Zak Kutsulis went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Last week: No. 1.

2. Homewood-Flossmoor (11-1): David Fatoki pitched five innings and did not allow an earned run as the Vikings topped Joliet Central 12-4 and extended their win streak to nine. Last week: No. 2.

3. Sandburg (7-2): Brant Valach was the hero for the Eagles in a 6-5 victory over Lincoln-Way Central. He drove in three runs, including the game-winner, and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up the save. Last week: Unranked.

4. Rich Central (10-1-1): Missouri recruit Tyler House hit a two-run homer and the Olympians built a 10-5 lead over St. Rita in an exciting game that went back-and-forth but ultimately was suspended because of darkness. Last week: Unranked.

5. Lincoln-Way North (9-2): Sam Cook’s pitching has the Phoenix cooking. He tossed a three-hitter in a 7-3 victory over Stagg. A.J. Neufeld went 2-for-3, including a double. Jack Irace added two doubles. Last week: Unranked.
